Movie Recommendation of The Week: Crazy Stupid Love

Published by at 9:00 am under Columns,Movies

I’m the last guy in the world that would endorse a romantic comedy.   In fact I’ll add that I’d also be the last guy to recommend a “chick flick.”  The funny thing is that I think people must have construed this movie as both of these things when it is in fact not.

Just because Ryan Gosling is completely ripped and gets girls in this movie doesn’t make it a chick flick.   I mean yeah, Emma Stone being in it doesn’t help. but whatever.   Anyway, I’m just saying that Crazy Stupid Love is extremely good, witty, and sincere.

For those of you that don’t know, it centers on how a middle-aged husband’s life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce.  He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a new-found friend Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars.

What you don’t know is that this movie has an incredibly awesome twist and the performances by Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling are extremely memorable.   It’s just a feel good movie, and I think you guys owe it to yourselves to see it.

    Emma Stone is hardly ever in cliched romantic comedies. The only other one that could be considered a romantic comedy is Friends with Benefits, and she was in that for maybe two minutes.

    You USED to be the last person in the world to review a romantic comedy, but since YOU became an “US”, you have reviewed two romantic movies within one week.

    You’re killing me Lahey

    A) I didn’t write this

    B) I reviewed this when it came out and wasn’t wild about it.

    Is Jim Lahey another word for chambone?

    @sam

    You know Chambone?? I’m worried he’s going to murder me in my sleep someday.

    But no, he’s not Lahey. Chambone goes past snippy criticism and just spews pure, unfiltered venom like his only mission in life is to completely corrode my sense of self-worth.

    I definitely wouldn’t call it a “chick flick,” it’s a date movie for the older crowd. I tried to like it and it did have some funny parts but overall it gets way too preachy. It’s a movie for married couples going through a little rough spell to reassure them they were meant for each other. Completely unrealistic and pure hogwash.

    Then again, it may have hit just a little too close to home for me.

    @Paul Tassi

    Thanks for setting me apart from Chambone. I know I say a lot of snippy things, but they’re mostly in jest. Unlike many people on the internet, I’m not going to come to a site I genuinely dislike every day.

    Oh, and sorry for not noticing it was Nattyb’s post. As uasual, I jump to conclusions. Also, do you realize you respond to comments on Nattyb’s posts 100 times more frequently than he does? That’s awesome, it makes me feel like you’re an actual person who listens to what people have to say.

    Saw this movie for the first time a couple weeks ago with the girlfriend. I liked it a lot. It’s definitely not your run of the mill rom com.

    This may contain spoilers.

    Although I appreicate you going out on a limb in recommending a “romatnic comedy,” I still found it just as cliche and contrived as any other romatnic comedy. It’s just about another playboy type of guy finally falling in love. Also, I found it pretty unrealistic that the couple cheated on each other and still had a perfect happy ending. Then again, I am a self-proclaimed hater of the romantic comedy genre so maybe I am just partial…or bitter.
