Online Gaming in 2002
Before everyone lived and breathed Halo and Modern Warfare, there was only one shooter that had people truly addicted. Counterstrike was the best shooter of a decade ago, and the fact that it’s still actively played today says a lot about its quality.
The image in particular (via reddit) goes above and beyond to represent the era. DDR was all the rage in 2002 (I lost ten pounds that summer dancing up a storm in my basement), and the Kristin Kreuk poster just makes it. She was my desktop background through probably all four years of high school.

It’s worth noting that Counter Strike and Counter Strike: Source are found in the Top5 most played games on Steam every day of the week with a combined 130k+ players – a tremendous achievement for a game that came out so long ago, started out as a free mod and hasn’t changed much since it’s inception.
I remember fondly getting my first taste of Counter Strike when a pc gaming magazine here in Germany put the beta 6.5 of the mod on the cd included with the magazine and from there it went viral.
I also remember (less fondly) how Counter Strike was always the medias prime example for turning our youth into potential homicidal maniacs.
I’ve lost track of the game in recent years, but it’s still a big part of my youth. I don’t know how many hours I played this game both online and while attending lan parties.
