GIF of the Week: A Jelly Donut!

Published by at 9:00 am under Images

For those of you who have seen Full Metal Jacket then you’re probably laughing right now.  For those of you who haven’t then I might actually pity you because you have to see it right now.

Clearly the drill sargeant in this movie (Hartman played by R Lee Ermey) is one of if not the best ever.   It’s that annoying guy you see on all those commercials and he is playing a….drill sargeant.

I think it’s between him and Louis Gossett Jr. in An Officer and a Gentleman for who wins best Drill Sgt award.   In fact I’ll be writing an article on this shortly.

It’s Ermey because he was the one who showed Gosset Jr how to be a Drill Sergeant.

    R. Lee. Ermey is a former Marine drill instructor from Parris Island, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

He was originally the technical adviser for Kubrick, who once he saw how good he was, replaced the original person cast in the movie with Ermey.

    Also, it is spelled Sergeant.

I’ve seen the film but no, I did not laugh. I forgot the context of this gif, maybe I would find it funny if you explaned it.

I once saw An Officer and a Gentleman was coming on late one night on Cinemax, 30 minutes after Full Metal Jacket started on HBO. I watched both drill instructor scenes one after the other, and they are virtually identical. I would say its a push, but R. Lee is the real deal. He gets the edge. Plus, he was in The Frighteners, so yeah, Ermey.

Crembor already caught it, but seriously guys, you need to hire an editor or something. Hell, I’ll do it for minimum wage. But it’s just not good journalism in any field when you have egregious errors like “sargeant” instead of “sergeant”. I see stuff like this every day on this site.

I second ATMSK. Having been on the receiving end of a Marine DI, make sure when you write the article you call him a Drill Instructor. They get really pissy when you call them Drill Sergeants….

Kubrick was a notorious stickler. Everything in every shot had to be perfect, including dialog and delivery. Ermey impressed him so much as the ranting and raving Gny. Sgt. Hartman that he was allowed to improvise most of his lines. All of the abuse and insults that he spouts is all improv. Awesome.

In fact, when Ermey says the line about “not having the common courtesy to give the guy a reach around”. Kubrick yelled cut and had to stop to have the term “reach around” explained to him. When they told him, he reportedly burst out laughing and had Ermey do it again.
