Cancel 30 Rock, Not Community

Published by at 11:00 am under Editorials,Television

There’s some drama over at NBC right now that’s a bit unsettling. Community has been benched by NBC indefinitely, while 30 Rock is coming back and taking over it’s 8PM timeslot. This has worried both fans and those working on the show, as it’s certainly not the best indicator of faith that NBC has in the show. The network says that yes, it’s coming back, but they won’t specify when, and picking it up for another season is looking a bit unlikely at this point.

Community can be tough to get. My group of friends and I usually sit down and watch “TV Thursday” which consists of Parks and Rec, The Office and Always Sunny, but the vast majority of the group doesn’t really like Community despite liking all these other programs. It’s an exceptionally unusual show, but it’s very creative and one that breaks the mold of almost all half hour comedies on air right now. It’s not a straight mockumentary like The Office or Parks, nor is it a laugh track fueled  nightmare like Whitney or How I Met Your Mother. It’s something all its own with its memorable themed episodes. “Paintball” remains as one of the best episodes of TV show I’ve ever seen.

But 30 Rock? Its ratings are similarly low to Community’s, but if it’s one or the other, I’d say it’s the show that should get the axe. Yes, it used to be one of the funniest shows on TV, but those days are long gone as the characters refuse to evolve in meaningful ways. Even though the show still has great one-liners, which it’s always been known for, the individual plotlines have been increasingly stupid, making characters like Tracy and Jenna almost completely irrelevant. I know it’s a higher profile show as it has big names like Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, but that alone does not make it a better show than Community.

Both programs are struggling a bit, but I don’t remember laughing more than a handful of times through the entire last season of 30 Rock, while Community has still had a lot of great moments. Jeff’s karaoke duet with the Dean last week had me cracking up, and there have been similar classic moments in both this season and last.

If you have to pick one NBC, it’s got to be 30 Rock. Six seasons is definitely enough.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!!

Community is one of our favorite shows for “Comedy Thursdays” as our group of friends calls it. It’s what kicks off the whole line up! Honestly without Community being at 8 (7 here) We will probably skip 30 Rock all together and get food, (usually we wait for Whitney to eat).

I totally agree, 30 Rock has it’s moments, but it’s no where near as good or as funny as Community. I would honestly rather see ANY show on NBC’s line up nixed before Community, including the Office.

Thank god for FX shows. — If you’re skipping The League you’re missing out. Sure it’s kind of about football, but I’d say 10%.. That show is another big favorite of ours. But one you kinda have to let grow on you too, the characters are a bit abrasive, like Sunny. (And next week has Jeff Golblum as Ruxins dad [great casting there] and Sarah Silverman) The episode where the got ahold of a toilet seat made of cocaine was probably one of my favorite episodes of TV. OMG.

Community has been in a nosedive since the start of season two and it’s nowhere near as original or “weird” as it thinks it is

Then again I wouldn’t like to see a Jackless 30 Rock, so why not axe them both

Cancelling 30 Rock is going a bit far. How about cancel Whitney instead? I think we can all agree that show as bad as Parks and Rec and Community is good.

I knew it was going to happen. But I am still bummed about it. I was actually surprised when “community” got a 3rd season to begin with. This whole season just felt like borrowed time.

Hey, Paul. Just wondering, what exactly is your thursday line-up. Mine is:

    8:00 – Community
    8:30 – Parks and Recreation
    9:00 – The Office
    9:30 – Whitney
    10:00 – It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
    10:30 – Good Vibes
    11:00 – Beavis & Butt-Head
11:30 – The Big Bang Theory (On DVR)

It’s the best night EVER!!! Totally agree, I don’t like 30 Rock as much either (but it’s Okay). I don’t like Whitney that much, but when they switch to Up All Night mid-season, I’ll be a lot happier.

I’m pretty sure they already got a full season order so we will still be getting the rest of this season, NBC just doesn’t know when they’ll air it. And who knows, maybe Whitney Cummings will die when she accidentally eats her own head with her enormous mouth/teeth and community will find a new audience in Whitney’s time slot. If only we were so lucky.

Loved the episode a few weeks ago with the 6 different timelines. That was genius. I actually think Dungeons & Dragons was my favourite episode though, not Paintball.

Get rid of whitney and the world will be back to normal. Outsourced wasnt that bad either, but NBC has horrible execs and cant follow anything but their own greed and avarice. Community is soooo good. I burst out in laughter once or twice throughout the show and find myself smiling throughout.

I posted this originally under the morning link post, but it seems better to put it here. I’m hoping that for Community’s sake that NBC is doing this move with a plan similar to Parks and Recreation in order to bolster ratings. When Parks and Rec was floundering ratings wise during the first 2 seasons, they moved the show to midseason, made the entire first two seasons available on Netflix and then experienced a ratings boom because the netflix crowd was able to catch up on the show and understand the context and characters. Hopefully, they are planning a similar approach for Community because certainly is a show that requires some amount of context for the characters to understand why they all act the way they do.

I couldn’t stop singing “Kiss from a Rose” for days after the karaoke scene.

    @phelan1005

Why would NBC listen to a fan petition, signed by at most a few thousand people, over their own data? They obviously got some information that said Community is taking a nosedive and people don’t want to see it anymore. You know why? Because NBC is a multi-billion dollar company and they are all about profits. If Community was getting a decent amount of viewers, they would keep it. Since it’s not, they’re benching it.

It’s great that you want to help the show, but you should think of something that will actually help, otherwise you’re just whinging for no reason at all.

just get rid of whitney and lets move on.

    Save Community, Save the World!

  • Adam

You know, online campaigns and petitions have actually saved some shows such as Arrested Development and Chuck from cancellation in the past.

“taking over it is 8PM timeslot”? What does that mean?

  • Jake Stone

“It is ratings are similarly low”? What does that mean?

  • fizatdh

I have a feeling community gets a ton of views on Hulu, I wonder if that effects this at all?

  • James

How about cancel The Office or Whitney, don’t touch 30Rock. That show and Community are on top. Convo Done…

  • Paddy-o

    Nooooo!
What am I supposed to watch?!?!
How I Met Your Mother is almost dead to me, Big Bang is going there I fear.
New Girl seems nice, but I wonder if it can still hold up after I got over the ‘OMG Zoey is DAMN cute!!!’ phase….

Guess watching Firefly again sounds like a good idea ;)

  • evan

nooooooo!!! community’s the best comedy on tv right now. i only like a handful of shows because everything else is crap! don’t take that away from me! alison brie is adorable!

seriously. sign the facebook petition. fuck nbc.

  • Bert

The Office has gone on WAY too long, 30 Rock is getting to that point, and Whitney is sheer crap.

Community is actually the only Thursday night show I’ll make a point of watching. Parks and Rec is OK, but not enough to make me forego other things to watch.

Six seasons and a movie! Make it happen NBC.
