A Gallery of Inescapable Movie Poster Trends

If you haven’t noticed, for the most part, movie posters tend to completely suck lately. It seems pretty clear that they use one of a few basic composition archetypes, but until now, I don’t think we’ve ever had such a detailed compilation of the trend.

This is a series from Oh No They Didn’t! that shows all the various sins of lazy poster design. Above we have “Tiny People on the Beach, Giant Heads in the Clouds,” which is a particularly ergregoius one. But the list doesn’t stop there, as there are plenty more comparisons to be made. Chances are you’ve noticed them yourself, but now we have physical proof as to how much repetition is really going on. Check out the other collections below:

I would say these are poster design trends rather than inherent laziness on the designer’s part. I agree that one film may have created the trend and produced a hundred copycats and that is lazy.
But try to design a poster without any of the shown types and suddenly it becomes a bloody hard. I think there’s only so much that works on the mainstream public effectively.

Surprised the “Star Wars”, “Conan the Barbarian”, “National Lampoon’s Vacation” movie poster trope wasn’t put here. The one where the main character is lifting his phallic symbol to the heavens with a girl either clutching or just simply near his leg.

@Steve: That imagery is considerably older, going back to the old pulp fiction book covers.
