At Long Last I’ve Done It

Published by at 11:00 am under News,Video Games

There it is folks, I’ve officially crossed over. Last week I had a debate of the day set up where I asked if I should get a PS3. The response was overwhelmingly that I should, and this weekend I finally bit the bullet. The recent price drop to $250 was a big reason why, and also it helps that every game I want to play is probably about $20 or $30 now at the most.

So far I’ve picked up Uncharted 2 (I’ve played the first one already) and Demon’s Souls, a game that I will allegedly hate as it’s one of the hardest ever made and I have zero patience for that sort of thing. But it will be interesting to see how far I get and I can write about my experiences. After I get through (or attempt to get through) those, I’ll want to get to Infamous and Infamous 2, God of War 3 and probably Little Big Planet. Any other PS3 exclusives I must check out?

I haven’t played anything yet, despite having the system set up, because I was frustrated to learn when I opened it that the PS3 does not come with any sort of HD cable. For a system that purports itself to have the sharpest graphics, they seriously make you pay extra to play it on its max settings? I’m not going to boot up Uncharted until my $1.79 from Amazon HDMI cable shows up in the mail, as I want my first experience to be a good one. Xbox came with at least some sort of HD capability (though not HDMI), although I will say not having to buy a separate adapter for internet, nor pay a monthly fee for it, more than makes up for that shortcoming.

So yeah, I’m happy with my purchase, and this reminds of when I bought an original Xbox after being a PS2 loyalist for years. I had a great time playing Halo’s 1 and 2 and Fable, but most other titles crossed over. The same is true here, and really I only got this system for a few games, but doing what I do for a living, it’s probably a good idea to be well rounded. And now I guess I am a fanboy no more. Feels good.

Make sure to pick up Little big planet 2 over the first one as you can still play the millions of levels made on LBP1 on it anyway and it brings a lot of improvements.

Heavy Rain was a great experience, and Killzone 2 and 3 were pretty good fun.

PSN games Flower, Flow, PixelJunk Shooter are all great too.

and GT5 if your a racing fan.

  • Nick

I recommend finding Heavy Rain, mostly because I’d like to hear your opinion on it. I’m also curious as to how Demon’s Souls is.

  • Sams

oh and the resistance series have a great art style/direction and despite feeling a little old school in many areas have some really inventive guns and generally fun gameplay.

  • Mike

Not REALLY ps3 games but if you missed out on ps2 then I recommend god of war collection HD, sly cooper collection HD, and later this month Ico/ Shadow of the Colossus collection. Serious some of the best games of last generation and they look great in HD.

  • Eric

Killzone 2 and 3. They’re both a LOT of fun

  • http://nerdaverse.com theButterFly

    I would recommend Catherine.

  • Lman

Don’t forget to set up your PS3 to stream videos from your computer. That was the deciding factor for me. And the God of War series.

  • Pedro

Make sure you don’t abandon it and get some games to play on it, because you may regret getting it.
that happened to me in reverse: I’m a ps3 guy (use it almost everyday) for some years and I was also debating wether to get a 360, so i got one a couple months ago. I’m still using my ps3 for multi platform games and my 360 kept collecting dust…im probably gonna sell it now

My advice would be getting the Uncharted games including 3, GOW 3, inFamous 2 (not 1, it doesn’t hold up), LBP 2, Heavy Rain if you think you’re interested and Resistance 3 if you like FPSs.

    Congratulations!!!

Actually Xbox no longer comes with HD cables.

  • metalmmaniac

Everyone stole my recommendations. But at least you have a great lineup of cheap games to get started with.

Another vote for Flower from PSN, and Heavy Rain. Flower has the virtue of being pretty short, so you’d be able to write about it right away if you wanted fodder for Unreality.

Demons Souls is a great game even more fun when you make friends to play with for assistance to avoid invasions great challenge.

I suggest you play Heavy Rain as well along with Metal Gear Solid 4. those along with Demons sould are on the top of my PS3 list. love to see a review up for both Demons Souls and Heavy Rain– also if you enjoy Demon’s souls pick up Dark souls later on this Year.

Catherine is a fun game if you like Puzzles and challenges but short in general though.

Ico/ Shadow of the Colossus collection when it comes out.

Infamous was a fun game for me part two feels rather rushed.

    Welcome to the darkside!

Don’t Forget about Uncharted and Uncharted 2!

Uncharted is fun, but really it’s a setup for Uncharted 2. Best storyline I’ve ever played through in a game!

Question to all: My gf wants to play Portal 1 on PS3. Is the only way to do that to buy a physical copy of The Orange Box? I didn’t see it anywhere on PSN.

  • Willie McCoy

3D Dot Game Heroes and Heavy Rain are two games that I really enjoyed on my ps3.

  • http://animeprincess.kokidokom.net lostty

I would suggest Heavy Rain, great fun!

  • http://www.seasonedgamers.com JapJay

Yeah, I know they released Portal as a standalone download on XBLA but I’m pretty sure Orange Box is only on disk for PSN, Paul.

Also, in addition to the normal diaries you do for game, I think you shouold start a ‘rage’ diary for Demon Souls.

  • Tom

I bought Outland from the PS3 store a few days ago for $10. It’s an amazing game. Mega Man 9 and 10 are pretty good too, but the final boss is absurdly difficult.

I bought my PS3 when FF13 came out, and since it has just been collecting dust. Dante’s Inferno and FF13 are the only retail games I own (plus the 3 games from the psn store). Although, I’m probably going to get Demon’s Souls next time I order something from Amazon.

  • Sideshow

Definitely echo the Killzone 2 & 3 recommendations. I know it’s a cross over but if you don’t already have it, get Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Fantastic online play! BF3 on PS3 is gonna be sick!

XBOX 360: When you’re with friends

PS3: When you have time to yourself

  • Frank

    Heavy Rain FTW

  • donpureevil

    congratulations to your decision!

btw, the fat ps3 came with a hdmi-cable

oh and you really should go for heavy rain. and if you wanna play metal gear solid 4, please wait for the mgs collection later this year. so you can play 2&3 first.

  • Tim

Nice purchase. The Orange Box is the only way to get Portal 1 for PS3. But I heard the translation of that game for PS3 is horrendous compared that on 360. (Not a fanboy statement as I am a PS3 owner — just for clarification). Also, I know this sounds insignificant but I just wanted to let you know about “dynamic themes” for the PS3. They’re interactive themes with moving backgrounds. Insignificant like I said, but they’re pretty sharp to look at. There are a bunch of free ones available that you can download right through your web browser. The URL is, simply, http://www.ps3-themes.com.

My Xbox didn’t come with an HD cable. As other have mentioned, be sure to check out some of the indie games Sony is great at bringing to PSN: Flow, Flower, any Pixeljunk game, Super Stardust.

thatgamecompany, which made Flow and Flower and is making Journey, is one of the greatest arguments in the games as art debate.

  • Jack

Surprised there’s no love for 3D Dot Game Heroes.

As you can see, the PS3 has a litany of pretty good exclusive games. It will really depend on your taste but because the console has been out for so long you’ll have a wealth of opinion and data to go off of.

I’ve also been enjoying Yakuza 4 a bit lately.

  • http://unreality ORA

Orange box is the only way to play Portal 1 on PS3 worth it though and its like $10-$20 tops.

  • http://mandyatlarge.com Mandy

Yay for ps3s… I don’t play a lot of games (just watch them get played buy the guys in the house) but if you do like physics-based games and interesting art styles, check out Pixeljunk’s Eden.. It’s my favorite. Great design and music…

  • Camden

orange box sucks on the ps3, technical problems such as low framerate. gears 3 next week, and so far the gunstringer for kinect is fantastic

  • elnino

If there’s three exclusives (besides Uncharted) it’s these three:

Little Big Planet 2 (If you get the newer one, there’s no need to get the older one, it’s the same game with newer levels and better graphics plus all the user levels were brought over)

Flower (If you’re going to be killing shit all day, you need this game, great relaxer)

Heavy Rain (probably my favorite experience on the PS3, )

    The rest:
    Team ICO/Shadow of Collossus collection
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – Only if you played and loved 1-3, otherwise the story and the game won’t be worth it and won’t make sense

Anything Ratchet & Clank related: IMO it’s the best modern day platformer.

    Sly Cooper series

  • Sam

I have to suggest any pixeljunk game. They’re super cheap and super addictive and awesome. And FYI, not that I condone any such behavior but if you have a good friend that already owns a ps3, you can add a separate profile with his psn ID and password so you can download any games he has already purchased because the psn allows 5 downloads of all games free if charge. But you didn’t hear any of this from me.
Oh yeah and I agree with everyone else, skip the first little big planet and go right to 2. It has all the same build tools and more, plus it has all the user created levels from the first one. Maybe you could even find my “sackboy in the land of Oz” level I made.

  • david stoner

Big fan of this site for a while. Had to comment on this. God of war 3 is a must. I wish other people would play it so i could just watch them play. It’s like a movie. uncharted is always awesome. Metal gear solid 4 was great too. ratchet and clanks are a must.

  • Nickincollege

My two biggest suggestions are MGS 4 and GT5. I don’t know if you’ve played any previous Metal Gear Solid games, but personally I thought the fourth was a masterpiece. If you haven’t played any of the previous ones and you don’t feel as though you have the time to do so, I suggest buying MGS 4 anyways and reading up the backstories of characters and the story lines of the first three on metal gear wiki before popping in the fourth. It helps a lot but the game itself does a good job as well through the use of flashbacks to remind you what happened. It has tremendous replay value as there are seemingly countless achievements and unlocks within the game i.e. Altair’s assassin costume, various camouflages and weapons. You can go in guns blazing, or you can try and sneak your way through without killing anyone….. As for GT5, if you like racing games, this is the game.

  • jalijan

    Metal gear Solid 4

  • Dusty

Not sure about the move PT…

I did the same thing about six months back, loved the PS3 for a short time and did have a great time with some of the key exclusives, but have largely moved back to the 360 now and haven’t turned on the PS3 for a month or so. It’s just an interface choice for me, as both platforms tend to get most of the big titles now.

On the games front, Uncharted 2 is amazing, Demons Souls is surprisingly enjoyable and MGS4 is super too.

    Have fun.

  • Sams

If you like racing games, Motorstorm Apocalypse provides more thrills per minute than most and has bloody addictive online play with a ranking/levelling system and everything.

  • PaulM

It’s about time! Real gamers have both an XBOX and a PS3! Why miss out on all the great exclusives for each! Congrats and enjoy. I won’t even bother naming exclusives as I’m sure everyone else already has.

  • Jewlzeh

Looks like a lot of other people have suggested heavy rain and i would too. Its an amazing and unforgettable experience and probably not quite like anything youve ever played before. So good!

  • MoFoJames

The Ratchet and Clank Future titles are great, and definitely worth a look. Heavenly Sword also.

  • Monty

Valkyria Chronicles. Weird anime type storytelling, but pretty awesome gameplay.

  • Mrdinero123

Personally i love the Ratchet and Clank series (excluding the 2nd game, ‘going commando’) i found them somewhat challenging, exciting and the adult humor/themes are pretty funny as well
