The Morning Link: Accidental Racism in the Wild

Published by Paul Tassi under Morning Link

Racism is bad, when it’s intentional, but these thirty photos show that sometimes it’s just a big misunderstanding. Haven’t you ever watched Curb Your Enthusiasm?

Peanuts Get Literal

Published by Paul Tassi under Images,Oddly Enough

No, this isn’t badass or sexy which are the usual qualifiers to get a post here, but it is rather charming, and I couldn’t resist this literal interpretation of Peanuts. I grew up loving that cartoon, and watched its movies every national holiday practically.

Fun fact: creator Charles Schultz actually hate the name “Peanuts” for the strip, which was chosen by his editors, as he thought it was stupid and didn’t make any sense. It really doesn’t, but it’s so iconic now it doesn’t really even matter.

Old Spice Meets Super Mario Meet Insanity

Published by Paul Tassi under Video Games,Videos

Congrats to Old Spice for having ad campaigns so good, the internet chooses to spread them around for free. Hard to come by in this day an age.

What you’re about to witness is a remix of one of their classic campaigns which featured Terry Crews as a crazy man promoting their product. Someone has cut his various sounds into something resembling the Super Mario theme on meth, and it’s the strangest thing I’ve seen all week. Check it out for yourself above.

The Captain America Sequel

Published by Paul Tassi under Images,Movies

This joke only really works if you’ve seen the Captain America movie, which all of your of course should have after my somewhat glowing 4 star (out of five) review earlier this week.

But for those who didn’t, I’ll do a brief summary. In the film, it’s implied that scrawny Steve Rogers is a virgin because he “never found the right dance partner,” but after his hunky trasformation, he doesn’t even have time to get with the ladies as he’s too busy saving the world. He only actually gets a kiss from Peggy Carter until he’s (spoiler alert if you managed to escape the comic books your whole life) frozen in ice for 70 years and she’s either crazy old or dead.

Though thinking about it, he was on tour with a fleet of USO girls for a long ass time before jumping to superherodom. Think his rigid moral code made him resist temptation?

Adding to My Nerd Resume with Magic the Gathering

Published by Paul Tassi under Oddly Enough

Attempting to bolster my nerd cred past 20 mere years of TV, movies and video games, I sometimes go to some strange places. Like sitting down to learn how to play Magic the Gathering at 24 years old.

How did I miss it growing up, despite legions of friends who were hooked on the game? In my media-restricted household, Magic cards were deemed far too demonic for me, and so I was forever resigned to Pokemon cards instead, which probably cost me a grand in allowance money, and I never actually learned how to really play that game either.

But recently my friends and I were having a nostalgic chat about Magic, and they both said that they had their old cards around and we should play some time. My roommate specifically went a step above and beyond and went out and bought starter decks so he might better teach  me. Adorable.

So I’m happy to report that I’ve survived my first few games of Magic, and I really did enjoy the results. Demonic pictures aside, I think this could have been a really useful exercise for young kids, teaching them strategy and vocabulary words like “pacifism” and “dismemberment.”

Have Video Games Become More Engaging than Movies?

Published by Paul Tassi under Editorials,Video Games

I’ve had a strange realization over the past few weeks, and I’ll be curious to see if any of you agree with me. For compiling my list of five movie moments that actually scared me, I had to reach all the way back to Jurassic Park to even find a fifth one, and that was because I was like seven at the time.

Furthermore, these moments only scared me when I was at a theater in pitch blackness with a giant screen. Any movie I’ve seen on DVD hasn’t actually frightened me at all. But what has? Video games.

That’s right, it seems that horror video games are replacing horror movies as the primary way to scare grown men. This got its start way back when Silent Hill and Resident Evil were new series, but now it’s progressed to titles like Dead Space, Amnesia and the below Nightmare House mod for Half-Life 2. There are countless videos of players on the internet screaming in terror as a result of these games, despite being on a half sized screen smaller than a movie theater or a TV.

Hey Look, a Gallery of a Guy Dressed as Raiden for Once

Published by Paul Tassi under Images,Video Games

Poor Metal Gear Solid’s Raiden, like the Legend of Zelda’s Link, is just one of those characters who simply looks better when cosplayed by a female. Blame Japanese character design for that fact, but it’s true, as the characters are generally pretty feminine in the games.

But today we have the rare appearance of a good MALE cosplayer who is taking the reigns back from the ladies with this rather excellent and highly, highly detailed Raiden costume.

His name is PhDPepper, though I suspect that might be an alias. He spent forever making the costume and then got it shot by a few professionals from BlankLogo and Big White Bazookas. I think he went a bit effects heavy with a few of the shots, but it definitely is a really cool gallery and costume. Check it out for yourself below.

Photo of the Week: What’s Going on Here Spike?

Published by Nattyb under Images

I’m pretty sure that in the history of Spike Lee’s career we have not seen a picture like this.  And I’m sure that in the history of Reverend Al Sharpton’s career we haven’t seen a picture like this (though we have seen Sharpton fight people so he’s more likely).

I assume this is at some sort of award show or charity event.  Kudos to those of you that can find the origin of this picture.   We just found it on some forum so I have no idea where it’s from.

Regardless it’s pretty funny and we hope you agree.

Six Awesome Geek Expos Other than Comic Con

Published by Nattyb under Lists,Video Games

There’s been a ton of talk this week about Comic Con, and rightfully so.  In fact yesterday Paul presented his annual Comic Con cosplay gallery featuring some of the best costumes that were seen at the event.

But if you’re a true geek you’ll know there are more events out there.  While Comic Con is probably the biggest, there are still others out there that will give you the goods that you need.

Here are six worth attending…..
