Funny and Odd Vintage Computer Ads

Published by at 8:00 am under Images

Honestly I can’t even imagine how computers used to have to advertise to get people to buy their products.   This is before computers were a necessity.  Today, it’s a given that you’ll be buying a computer at some point, and probably every year or two.  But back in the late 70s through mid 80s computers had to be marketed like anything else.

The weird thing is that they had to use the same crappy tactics that companies use today.   They used sex, weird situations, and stuff that really kind of blew your mind.  It’s hard to think of these gimmicks when attached to computer advertising but I think you’ll find that the gallery below is proof of the oddity of old school computer advertising…..

King Kong Bundy?  Now that is priceless.

The first thing that strikes me is how huge computers were.

You hint at it yourself: Personal computers were at the time expensive novelties, especially in a home setting, so why buy? Because you’ll get laid, be able to show off, seem smart etc. The usual marketing tricks that always work.

Expensive novelties? Expensive yes, novelties no.

I was selling computers back then. They weren’t novelties as the people who bought them saw their value.

Marketing did not sell computers in those days, needs did.
