The Best Possible Use of Excel

There’s currently some sort of war going on over at Reddit to see who can be the least productive at their office and paint the coolest picture using Excel. First it was Batman, then Zelda annnnnd now we have winner. I’m in no way sure how someone went about doing this, but unless there’s some program that changes pictures into excel spreadsheets, I have to think this is legit.

Incidentally, this is the closest I’ll ever get to Excel in my line of work, as literally everyone I know with an office job or in grad school uses the program every day. Oh wait, scratch that, I just used to it fill out my Oscar bracket, so that counts. Right?

From the screenshot, it looks like they made every cell in the worksheet as small as possible in width and height, and then applied a cell color to each one as if it were a pixel. They might have written a Visual Basic script to help do it, but I just don’t see how they would have that kind of time to make this. It would have taken weeks. Clever idea.

Yeah, there mus be a way to read an image with VBA, pixel by pixel, and apply the corresponding –or closest– color to each cell. If I ever get some free time, I might try it… and then I’ll come and post it for all of you to “convert” your own images to Excel.

I know that would be as useful as a USB keyboard with no letter E, but we engineers have fun in mysterious ways…
