Debate of the Day: Who’s Going to Win All Them Oscars?

Published by at 11:30 am under Debate,Movies

Alright people, the time is nigh. The Oscars are here and I am jetting out of here to cover them in Chicago. That totally makes sense, don’t question it.

Yes, I will be doing my third(?) annual liveblog of the Academy Awards, and I invite you to tune into Unreality Sunday night just before 8PM if you want my brilliant running commentary on everything going on for the duration of the night.

But first, I figured I’d test the waters and see who you guys thought was going to take home the gold. Feel free to let me know in the comments, and you can see a full list of the nominees after the jump.

As for me? I went about 85% in EVERY category last year, including 6 for 6 in the major categories. This year? I doubt I’ll repeat that performance, but I’ve got Social, Fincher, Firth, Portman, Bale, Steinfeld. What say you?

I have a terrible feeling that the King’s Speech will win despite clearly being the inferior movie when compared to the Social Network.

Colin Firth will win best actor. He deserves it, but I still wish Franco could get the nod instead.

I think Fincher will win best Director.

  4. JoeandMarysOtherSonon 25 Feb 2011 at 12:54 pm

I think I may be the only person in America with zero interest in ever seeing The Social Network.

  5. Uncoolaidmanon 25 Feb 2011 at 1:01 pm

    @JoeandMarysOtherSon

No, trust me you are not. I have one a friend who refuses to watch it for some reason. Heaven forbid that some people agree with the overwhelming majority on some movies.

  6. joeon 25 Feb 2011 at 1:03 pm

Why is the King’s Speech inferior to The Social Network?

  7. Galeon 25 Feb 2011 at 1:23 pm

I think it will win best picture, but I tried watching The Social Network and turned it off due to boredom. I just couldn’t get into it at all

  8. Uncoolaidmanon 25 Feb 2011 at 2:06 pm

The King’s Speech was good, but it was just not original. It was standard oscar bait fare.

This guy does a really great job of summing up my feelings on the King’s Speech.

Firth, Portman and Bale are all easy picks.

Ill go with Kings Speech for best picture, helena botham carter for supporting actress and Aronofsky for director although I feel the Coen brothers deserve it just a little bit more.

It’s my opinion that the acting in The King’s Speech was much better then what was seen in The Social Network.

You can call it Oscar bait if you want to, but dig a bit deeper and you will see that the performances in Speech are just above and beyond the Facebook nerds.

  11. Uncoolaidmanon 25 Feb 2011 at 3:21 pm

    @ joe

We are in complete agreement on that. Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth beat out Garfield and Eisenberg in terms of acting, but that is not everything. Kings overall does have better acting, but The Social Network is the complete package. Great acting, best screenplay of the year, completely entertaining, expertly directed, and just more original than the King’s Speech.

The point I’m making is just because some movie does not measure up to King’s in acting performances does not mean it is not worthy of the Best Picture award.

  12. joeon 25 Feb 2011 at 3:41 pm

How can one be more original then the other, when they’re both based on true stories? I guess it just comes down to which story you feel is more interesting.

Personally I lost interest in The Social Network about half way through. I found none of the characters in it to be like able in any way.. just entitled rich kids who got bored with college life.

  13. Uncoolaidmanon 25 Feb 2011 at 4:50 pm

I say the Social Network is more original because no movie before it was just quite like it. British period pieces, however, have been done to death.

  14. Dresteron 25 Feb 2011 at 8:35 pm

@uncoolaidman, I can’t think of a movie about stuttering. I though it was pretty original.

I was a bit disappointed seeing social network. After all the great reviews I was expecting on hell of a movie. But it’s nothing more than a fake biography from what’s his name. If the movie was about a fictional social network I doubt anyone would say it’s a good movie.

Yesterday I went to see Black Swan and I have to say Portman deserves an Oscar, what a performance.

  15. Matton 25 Feb 2011 at 8:35 pm

no love for black swan?? easily the best picture of the year…and yes i’ve seen them all. kings speech was dull and while the acting was great, the story just didn’t hook me. social network was an interesting story but the dialogue was too rushed and it seemed to confuse a lot of people. black swan was an experience. i havent seen a character transformation like that in a long long time. every actor was perfectly cast and the story flowed beautifully. although i know its not going to win because natalie portman rips her finger skin off and gets her clit licked by mila kunis, this movie gripped me and ill never forget it.

p.s. exit through the gift shop will not win despite being the best documentary solely based on the snobby oscar peeps being douches and not wanting banksy to come out in a gorilla mask.

  16. Uncoolaidmanon 25 Feb 2011 at 9:44 pm

    @ Drester

I said the British Period piece is unoriginal, not the stutter… fact is the film was a safe choice, it was bland and formulaic. It was not a bad movie because it has been done well before. This type of oscar bait is like doing a mad lib. The structure is already set, they just filled in the pieces.

  17. Uncoolaidmanon 25 Feb 2011 at 9:49 pm

    @ Mike

The dialog was the best part of The Social Network. That’s pretty sad if people were actually confused by it. I’m not trying to rip on them, but it sucks that they missed out on a great movie because they could understand what the characters were talking about.

  18. Random Leonon 26 Feb 2011 at 3:44 am

oscar prediction ≠ personal likes and dislikes

the king’s speech is pure oscar bait (albeit a fairly enjoyable one), but i feel like in recent years, unless there’s a clear-cut winner, the academy seems to avoid oscar baits for best pic, but subsequently make up for it with the other major awards, thus giving the blu-ray cover a nice “winner of 4 academy awards” tag phrase. (this is all personal conjecture)

with that in mind, i think it will go like this: The Social Network, Fincher, Firth, Portman, Rush, Adams

  19. Mikeon 26 Feb 2011 at 1:40 pm

@uncoolaidman: I never said the dialog wasn’t good. I haven’t even seen The Social Network.

  20. Georgeon 26 Feb 2011 at 8:39 pm

Why did Tron not get nominated for best Special Effects?

  21. Uncoolaidmanon 27 Feb 2011 at 10:32 am

    @Mike

Sorry Mike, that comment was meant for Matt.
