The 2010 Oscar Nominations Chock Full of Non-Surprises

I didn’t bother waking up a half hour early today to catch the 83rd Academy Award nominations, as I’d much rather consume them in list form. If you feel the same way, you’re in luck, because I have the full list posted below.
Really, 95% of these are what you’d expect from the crop of movies out this year, with very few omissions or surprise additions. Read on :
I’ll start my commentary here so you don’t have to scroll way, way down for it. Best Picture’s only real omission is The Town, but I can see how the Academy would put in Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are All Right there for diversity’s sake, despite both being overrated. The rest? It pretty much mirrors my top ten of the year list, outside of The Karate Kid of course.
People are crying foul that Chris Nolan didn’t get a Best Director nom for Inception, but I’d say everyone on the list deserves to be there. Besides, he wouldn’t have won anyway. There are virtually no surprises in any of the actor categories, thought I do not understand how the True Grit duo of Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld get a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress nomination respectively, when she was clearly the lead in the film, with him a supporting character. But I’d say she’s 80% more likely to win in this category, if she can beat out either of the girls from The Fighter, which she should.
I guess I’m a little bit surprised that neither Andrew Garfield nor Justin Timberlake landed a Supporting Actor nomination for The Social Network, and that Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are All Right actually got two more slots here. Guess they need justification for why they were in the Best Picture list.
Not much else to comment on after that, since apparently movies don’t use make-up anymore, as there are only two films nominated in that category (The Way Back and The Wolfman). And I’ve never really understood the Best Visual Effects category where previously Transformers lost to The Golden Compass. This year Tron Legacy isn’t even nominated while the shit-tastic Alice and Wonderland is, along with Hereafter. Hereafter? Seriously?
Anyway, as I said, not a terribly large amount of surprises, and I already have most of my picks. Last year I went about 93%, even in the random categories, and I’m hoping for a repeat performance this year.

im bummed… no nolan for best director? he’ll get there someday i guess
Iron Man 2 or Inception have to win for Visual effects. I have no idea that Hereafter and Alice in Wonderland got nominations. I guess Harry Potter got in due to Voldemort’s face. Tron deserves to be nominated and win in a landslide. I think Black Swan could have been nominated without getting the collective panties of the academy in a wad.
As for Christopher Nolan, I’d put him in over David O’Russell. The Academy owes him after the Dark Knight snub. I still think Fincher deserves the win, but there is no doubt Nolan should nominated.
This may be biased but I really think that HP should win at least one of their nominations. It would be a shame for such an amazing and successful franchise to say goodbye after ten years without an Oscar. That’s just me though. Oh and The Social Network will win hands down.
And by the way, @Uncoolaidman, HP is in there for the Deathly Hallows story CGI, not Voldemort’s face…… Did you even see the movie??? Doesn’t sound like it.
I did see the movie Metz, and there was not a whole lot of impressive special effects in the movie. I thought Voldemort looked good, that is all I meant. The CGI in the film was fine, but nothing oscar worthy besides the work they did on Ray Fiennes to make him into Voldemort.
Did you see the movie Metz? You do know Ray Fiennes’ face does not look like that naturally, right? Doesn’t sound like it…
Only real surprises were Nolan not being nominated and Tron missing out for best effects. The entire Live Action Short category is pretty messed up, too, but that is because a lot of the better short films get disqualified for various reasons.
On that note, Nolan was just the odd man out. Actually, he, Boyle, and Afleck all were. When there’s only 5 nominations and 10+ worthy possibly nominees, someone has to not make the cut. Only one that I think Nolan was better than this year was Russell, anyway. And with the performances he pulled out of Bale and Leo (who both should win their awards), as well as Adams and Wahlberg, can you really not nominate him?
I’m not getting into an argument about this. Yes, I knew that his face wasn’t like that, it has also been shown in 3 previous films. So it makes you think why they would nominate HP for this when his face has been the same since GOF. Oh wait, that’s because it was nominated for the Japanese-inspired CGI that was done during the story of the Three Brothers. No need to reply, cuz your wrong and your looking like an ignorant so-called movie buff.
i finally saw The Social Network last week and was really surprised about all the hype around it. i did enjoy it quite a bit. also, as for acting in that movie, you have to give it to Armie Hammer for playing the Winklevoss twins. that guy was better than Timberlake, Garfield and Eisenberg combined.
It’s a little disappointing that Tron wasn’t even nominated for Visual Effects…I meant, I know that a lot of critics didn’t enjoy that movie, but you have to admit that some of the CGI (a.k.a. the whole movie) was pretty impressive. It was definitely a visually memorable movie, even if the story wasn’t.
The noms look pretty good to me, actually. I think Social Network wins for best picture; Fincher is taking home best director. Deservedly so for both.
I thought Julianne Moore was better than benning in the kids are all right, but ah well – i think portman gets the award regardless.
very happy to see renner get some love for the town, but best supporting actor is bale’s in a walk.
And to everyone crying about Nolan not get nominated – get over it. Inception is arguably his worst movie. It’s a cool concept (dreams within dreams, etc), but the story and characters are flat. We can go on and on about how Avatar was just a bunch of cool graphics but no substance; I’d say the same for Inception. Adding that ridiculous score just makes it worse.
And I love Nolan. He just doesn’t deserve the nom this year, sorry.
How is toy story an adapted screenplay? Is it adapted from toy story 2? If so thats just retarded.
Boring… the wrong movie and actors will win anyway
@ Metz
it was nominated for Japanese-inspired CGI that was done during the story of the Three Brothers. No need to reply, cuz your wrong and your looking like an ignorant so-called movie buff.
You’re right, that part completely slipped my mind for some reason. While I do think that part was well done, I still don’t think it is quite enough to earn a nomination when compared to something like Tron, where the amazing visuals are a focal point of the movie.
As for my attitude, I was only dishing out what I had been given. You had a right to call me out on forgetting the three brothers scene, but you did not have to assume that I was being an ignorant jerk by commenting on a movie I had never seen.
I would say the biggest snub has to be Tron in the Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects categories.
Tron completely snubbed for visual effects and original score!
Despicable Me not nominated for animated film!
And OMG Buzz Lightyear isn’t even nominated for best supporting actor!
Worst Oscars ever!
Oh yeah I totally forgot about Tron for Best Original Song. I mean after all, didn’t Daft Punk make an album and then Disney was nice enough to honor them with its own movie? Lol, only kidding. But still, some of those songs are fucking awesome. I guess the Academy doesn’t appreciate Electro music as much as country (song)
I like the Razzies better
Not sure why you are knocking Hereafter. It was truly amazing work, both the tsunami and the more subtle work throughout the rest of the film. Truly under-appreciated. I would be thrilled if it won, though I think Inception is clearly the front runner.
