Debate of the Day: Should Darren Aronofsky Direct Wolverine?
Today’s debate is inspired by the fact the rumor has it, Darren Aronofsky is being seriously considered to direct the Wolverine sequel, and is already in negotiations with Fox. This comes after the news that WB picked Zack Snyder to helm Superman, where Aronofsky was also a contender. But either out of spite or for unrelated reasons, he’s considered a studio and universe switch from DC to Marvel. But what the hell would a Darren Aronofsky Wolverine movie look like? Is this a dream come true or potentially a nightmare?
I can see both sides of this. Aronofsky is an exceptionally talented director, and could make one hell of a film, especially when compared to how gloriously shitty the original Wolverine Origins movie was. But contrastingly, he’s never taken on a project as mainstream as this, and I fear that he won’t be able to make the (surely) PG-13 Wolverine movie the studio wants, and either he’ll walk off set or turn out a finished product tainted by studio edits and rewrites.
But even with that risk, I’m firmly in the camp that I at least want to see him TRY. This opportunity is too good to pass up, and I’m wondering what happens when you take a quality, independent director, and put him on a big budget mainstream film like this. He’s already worked with Jackman before, so that should help, and Wolverine is one hell of a tortured character, which is right up Aronofsky’s alley. I say go for it, but what do you guys think?
More Unreal Posts

Sam Raimi did a similar sort of thing with Spider-Man.. I think it could work.
I dont like it. Aronofsky is too abstract for a simple story like Wolverine. I know hes great director but all of his movies thus far have had some sort of surreal abstract motif supplementing the main focus of each movie. I think they need to make a wolverine movie in the vein of Blade where it was dark and the main hero was a complete and utter baddass. Fuck a pg-13 rating it just doesnt work well for a character whose series tends to have a bloody corpse in each issue.
That said I would like to see what he can do…if hes given full creative control.
Eh….not so sure about this. It worked for Raimi and Nolan, but Aronofsky is likely in a no-win situation here. If he makes a Wolverine movie in “his style” it will piss off the studio suits and get no support upon release, thus tanking. If he buckles and makes a brainless, CG filled blockbuster he totally alienates his fan base.
Of course there’s always the possiblity that he can walk that fine line, pleasing critics, fans, and the retarded masses, pulling off a movie like The Dark Knight. But that’s a very tall order.
@ Andrew – sure, you take that risk, but could it possibly be any worse than the first one?
@ Bert – Probably not. I don’t think that’s possible. What I’m saying is why bother? It’s not like Aronofsky’s hurting for work. I say pass and let this franchise bury someone else’s career.
Yeah… why not? The Fountain was stupid as Hell, but it couldn’t be much worse than the first Wolverine. Sometimes directors are “abstract” and “misunderstood”, but sometimes they are just bad storytellers, and even they have no clear vision of how their own films are supposed to turn out. If Aronofsky is so visionary, perhaps he could actually make a movie that has an ending. To put it another way, I think most people would rather hear John Hurt narrate a fairy tale than fall asleep while being talked down to by a theoretical physicist.
personally, i think aronofsky should direct an adaptation of neuromancer.
#Anaughtybear Are you joking? The Fountain boring as hell? and that it has no ending?
OH boy. I don’t even know where to begin your humiliation. In fact, i won’t even bother, i’ll just spoil the whole thing for you. The conquistador is her wife’s story, a man who would do anything for his queen. The man in the bubble is his state of mind and the scientist is of course the man who can’t get over the fact that his wife will soon die (the main plot) which he eventually accepts as he finishes the book and the man in the bubble reaches the nebula.
Happy now?
You dumb fuck.
