The Super Smash Bros. Melee Secret Discovered Seven Years Later

Published by at 3:45 pm under Video Games,Videos

Gametrailers is currently doing a series of “Pop Fiction” video game myth videos that is turning out to be pretty cool. First, it was a secret room in Zelda, then it was if you could jump over the flag in Mario. Now? They’ve found their craziest secret yet.

The rumor is that through a glitch in Super Smash Bros. Melee, you can actually play as Master Hand if you fulfill a series of conditions. What’s the process? You’re going to have to watch the video to find out, but I will say it’s a bit complicated. Try it out for yourself, and see if you can get it to work.

The most miraculous part of this is that it was found by some random player goofing around seven YEARS after the game came out. It makes you wonder what secrets are in other existing games, just waiting to be discovered.

I don’t play SSB (although I have before), but to the point of this article, this kind of thing makes me think that some game developers probably have a stash of in-game secrets that the public hasn’t discovered yet. If I were programming a game, there’s no doubt in my mind I would put in some crazy stuff only to be accessed by way of blind luck just to see how long it took people to figure it out. It’s like hiding a secret collection of money or something inside the walls of an old house. That shit will sit there until someone comes along and does something crazy like tear the walls (or the whole house) down. That’s how I picture it at least.

It works! It works! It’s not that hard… just good timing and trying again and again and again.

It also works with only one player (socket 3 always) in Training and Events http://www.twitpic.com/21z4gc
In Adventure, the game freezes when you start.
In Classic, the game freezes when it tries to load the “vs” screen.

Didn’t try it out in Event though. It’s late now, I’ll try it tomorrow. Check my twitter if you care. (mecart)

Oh, yes, and it DOES work if you’re playing on the Wii (The Gamecube game, of course)

Um… With the exception of the SSB secret, I didn’t think any of these things were a debate or “secret.
I’ve jumped the flagpole. Everyone has at least once, I’m sure.
The Zelda thing was old news pretty quick without a strategy guide for the game.
There’s gotta be better examples than these.
