Crysis is Essentially Reality at This Point
After watching the Big 3′s slavish, sad devotion to motion controls and 3D at E3, you have to wonder, what happened to the days when processing power and better graphics ruled all?
Those days seem to have been indefinitely put on hold, as a new console generation is probably not coming for another few years or so, despite this one already being the longest yet, or at least close to it.
Yes, graphics in games look good now, but we’re not at photorealism yet, and we shouldn’t forget that should be the ultimate goal of the video game industry. Thankfully, one title realizes this, and that’s why Crysis will forever be the king of amazing graphics as seen above.

Really? Shouldn’t the ultimate goal of video games be to make the best, most fun game possible?
@Torint, yeah, that’s the impression I had too, I guess we’re in the minority.
Graphics and processing power will be important to some, no matter what. I find it silly to put focus on it.
To me, graphics in a game is like paint in a car. I love my Caddy. It looks great outside. I wouldn’t have bought it if there was a big scratch, or rust, on the outside. But really, I love it because it hauls @ss and is comfortable as hell, handles like nothing else.
Not because it’s paint is “top notch”. Now, it looks good, and is current so I’m not saying that doesn’t matter. Just saying that I spend more time INSIDE my car, then outside looking at it.
Give me something fun and interesting to play. Something with tight controls (Don’t care if it has motion, just as long as they are tight). Something that is paced well, with minimal holes. THEN make it look good. Good, meaning not necessarily real. You seen that Kirby game from yesterday, with those stylized graphics? Looked pretty as hell, not an inch of realism.
Of course, realism fits-in with certain games, and stylization shouldn’t be used as a way to get lazy with graphics. It’s not a “get out of jail free card” for putting effort on the looks of the game.
I don’t want to play MW2 with Wind Waker cell shaded graphics, or Halo with a stylized Mario Galaxy 2 look. But at the same time, I just don’t think everything needs, or should, look like Crysis up there.
I didn’t see the titles on the pictures and originally thought the pictures on the right were reality. This is crazy! I wish I had a computer that could run this game on high graphics.
The image was a pre-release image from Crysis (original game). If memory serves correctly, it was just a promotional image of what the CryEnging was capable of accomplishing. Not really an in-game shot.
lol you can have the most realistic looking game ever, with physics that allow a person to fall down a set of stairs and look EXACTLY like a real person or water that actually moves like water, but if the game sucks it doesn’t make it any more than a really nicely polished turd.
