The Magic of Sesame Street Revealed

It’s cool to see a behind the scenes shot of Sesame Street, but I have to say, it’s a little disconcerting to see Bert and Ernie with hands up their asses, even if that is Jim Henson and Frank Oz controlling them. Interesting how it takes two people to operate Ernie.
I’ve always wondered how puppeteers operate puppets in such an awkward position like that. How do they make them move and act convincingly when they’re hoisted way above their heads and they have to use monitors to even see what the hell they’re doing? This picture does not answer this question, as it still looks insanely hard.
In related news, puppeteering is way more fun than it used to be, (you want to click that).

my younger brother makes and performs with puppets like this. he’s won some pretty prestigious awards for musical numbers incorporating them (like performances of songs from avenue Q and the lion king). right now he’s in the process of making an elmo puppet and its looking pretty damn close to the original
he has a fewl pics of some of the puppets online so here’s a link to his site http://stitched–up.deviantart.com/gallery/
is that tobias funke on the right there?
