A Time-Out from the Console Wars

Can’t we all just get along?
I understand that console fanboyism is rampant these days, but as games move closer and close to digital distribution, and exclusive titles are becoming a thing of the past, I think we can probably tone down all the hate.
I like the inclusion of the PC, which is an overlooked segment of the gaming populace, outside of eleven billion World of Warcraft players. That will change when Starcraft II and Diablo III come out though. In another five years.
The real war I see coming is casual vs. traditional gaming, one that will be fought WITHIN each console, as the PS3 and 360 are both introducing some sort of motion system that really still only works in pretty basic ways for pretty basic games.
I think eventually these two will merge, but it’s going to be a long hard fight to get there.

What’s the difference between a Toshiba dvd player and a Samsung dvd player? Nothing, really. They both play dvd’s. Aside from the GUI and small differences in features here and there, there really is no difference in the main function.
If exclusive titles continue to dwindle down in numbers like you predict, I would expect the market for consoles to behave the same way as the market for something like dvd players.
Of course, I’m sure the whole industry will go through an iPod/mp3 player stage, where there is a massively preferred brand over another. But essentially all mp3 players are made to do one main thing.
If you’re right, then 50 years down the road there may still be Xbox’s and PS3′s and Wiis and what not, but they’ll all be able to play video games. So as long as the pop technology that exists at the time is not exclusive to one console or brand…
Cloud gaming is the future.
I was a 360 fanboy until i moved into my current house with my roommates. I like all 3 major game systems equally now. Wii because it’s fun to get drunk & play anything from wii sports to the new mario, PS3 was awesome to play Assassin’s Creed & Resistance, and Xbox live is the one thing that makes me play the 360 more than anything else.
Except Microsoft nickel & dimes the PISS out of everything.
