The Most Terrifying Twelve Seconds in Video Game History

The prospect of drowning is frightening in real life, but if it does happen, at least there’s no scary music to go along with it.

There are many games where your character can drown, Tomb Raider, Mario, etc. But none are quite as heart-pounding as Sonic the Hedgehog, which played this frantic score until you managed to find an air bubble creeping up from the ocean floor. Also, the sound of the all your precious rings being scattered across the world is equally jarring if you ask me.

Thanks to Reddit for reminding me of this.

Haha, yeah that was dramatc. Terrible nervous feeling.

The oposite was the case in Metal Gear Solid. I thought it was totally cool to die in that game because of the “Snake? Snaaaake?”
Then you press the continue button and hear that reverberating gunshot “boom! (bomm!) ((boom!))…”

    Holy shit!!

You can get air from the air bubbles!?

You mean I suffered through months of “drowning music” induced ulcers when I could have got an oxygen boost…

    *sigh*

    I feel like a tard.

And yes losing your rings was made so much worse by that chiming sound…

    *reflecting on memories*
