Obscure Movie Characters We Like: Spaulding Smails From Caddyshack
Talk about one of the best one hit wonder characters of any comedy movie, Spaulding Smails encompasses it all. He is the snotty little brat grandson of Judge Smails and put simply is a royal pain in the ass. He’s got one liners. He’s got the attitude. Hell he even pukes into a car after drinking liquor with a burnt out cigarette in the glass (picture above).
He also lays claim to the lines “doodie!!!” and “I got it from a Negro” when lines like that weren’t considered so racist. Think back to movies like Blazing Saddles. I miss the days when racism wasn’t taken so seriously. Thank God for the Chappelle Show.
In any event, let’s give praise to John F. Barmon Jr for playing Spaulding and having a whopping ZERO film credits after Caddyshack until 2009 where he appeared in a documentary about bad golf. Barmon was last seen picking up a fumble for Texas Football as an assistant coach or something.

It’s not a question of racism being taken seriously or not. It was serious back then as it is today. It’s just that today, it has become PC to the point of taboo. Any racist humor, even satire, is generally frowned upon.
