Sometimes NASA is Still Pretty Cool

This isn’t about anything entertainment related per se, but it’s “unreal” enough that I’m posting it here. It’s a picture of NASA’s last night shuttle launch, and it’s pretty damn awesome to look at, especially through a 500mm lens.
Watching as many sci-fi TV shows and movies as I do, when I glance back to reality, it’s usually pretty depressing. We can’t even set up a moon base? Can’t even land on the next closest planet to us? Good lord.
NASA is chronically underfunded, due to our much more pressing priorities like war and…more war, so sadly I doubt we’ll get past Mars even in my lifetime. But in any case, pictures like these make me happy to know that at the very least, someone’s trying.

My one regret from college was never driving to Cape to watch a shuttle launch. A couple of my friends have done it and they said it’s incredible.
kewl!
Damn you Science Fiction for giving us unrealistic expectations about faster than light travel!
Pictures like this always remind me that practically everything involved in space or space travel is breathtakingly awesome. Great great pic.
I live 5 minutes from Kennedy Space Center and can say it’s going to be a sad day when this ends. Only 4 more launches and it’s over.
