Unreality is With Coco

So the new development since we first brought you the news that NBC was giving Conan the shaft, is that Coco is having none of this “move The Tonight Show back so Jay Leno can give him an even worse lead-in” bullshit, as Conan issued a carefully worded statement that essentially told NBC to go **** themselves. NBC now plans to simply give The Tonight Show back to Jay Leno and Conan would be straight out of a job, though would likely get an ass ton of money as NBC is egregiously violating his contract.

I’m not a big late night fan in general, but I do like Conan as the best of all of them, and he seems like a good guy who’s just getting absolutely hosed.  There’s not really that much I can do about it, but the latest internet trend is to display the above image to show support for Conan. Those of you without websites, just post it as a wall photo on Facebook or something. It’s by artist Mike Mitchell and it should probably be turned into a wall poster immediately.

When this all shakes down? I predict we’ll see The Conan O’Brien Show on Fox at 11.

    Yay for Conan!

    What I don’t understand in any of this is how come Jay Leno comes away with the show he never wanted to lose back, his time slot back, etc….his show FAILED. He’s being rewarded for failing…what the hell kinda deal does he have with NBC that they’re just gonna go back to to the ol’ days of Mr Chin with the Tonight Show again? Why is NBC willing to move an institution like the Tonight Show from it’s rightful timeslot just to accomodate this guy?? And really? They’re gonna give Jay a half hour show…what a joke…they were never planning that! It’s just to get Conan out!

    P.S. Jay Leno joking nightly about getting cancelled and blah blah blah…shut up you ungrateful, unfunny ingrate…you’re getting EVERYTHING you want! Oh and Jerry Seinfeld – I love your show, I do but blaming Conan for not making his show work and saying that poor Jay was a victimn of his time slot…SHUT IT…if the network hadn’t given your show some extra time it would have been cancelled before the end of the first season.

    Team Coco!

    I really hope NBC comes crawling back to Conan. I think at this point, he’s the one with the leverage.

    I’ve never liked Leno since day one, unfunny and untalented. Conan is in the middle of his TV career, has many years left, is still funny and connects with a much younger audience than Leno does. What on earth are they thinking banking on Leno over Conan? The best thing to do in the long term is to eat the Leno contract and keep Conan happy and at 11:35.

    Conan needs to go to Comedy Central and join his natural brethren, Stewart and Colbert. An hour and a half block of those three every night would be the best thing on tv. He would be in charge there, just like Stewart and Colbert. Not sure how they would work out time slots (perhaps move Stewart back to 10:30 and give Conan his old spot?) but it’d be worth it for the audiences, I think.

    I’m not trying to be anatagonistic but since I don’t watch the show and don’t actually own a TV to keep up with this stuff, I thought the reason Leno was moving back is because Conan is doing well in in this new timeslot. Is that not the case? Please enlighten me.

    @ Orleanas

    that doesn’t even make sense, if Conan’s ratings are fine why would they bring in someone with lower ratings to pull them up?

    I’ve never been a big fan of late night TV myself, but I can say having watched Jay Leno and Conan a few times each, Jay Leno bores me, he’s just not funny. Conan is hilarious. It just bothers me that Leno is getting his old show back based on his name. He’s been doing it longer and he has his foot in the door a little bit more than Conan, and it’s really unfair of NBC to do that. I don’t relaly blame him for leaving the network, I would too, that’s piss poor treatment.

    Conan won’t be showless for long, people like him too much for someone to not pick him up.

    @Ashweee…

    You’re right it doesn’t make sense, so I would say it’s safe to assume it was a typo and they meant they thought it was because he wasn’t getting good ratings.

    And that is part of the reason, the other part is Leno was getting crap ratings and killing there 10pm time slot all week. Leno didn’t have great ratings on the tonight show when he took it over the tonight show either, but NBC gave him time to gather a fan base, which is one of Conan’s points, they aren’t giving him much time to get comfortable in the show.

    I’m pretty sure this entails the contracts NBC made with Conan and Leno. They’re probably going with the most cost effective solution, which will probably come back to bite them in the ass since Conan is likely the bigger star at this point or he will become so given time.

    @Cheryl

    As a Leno fan, I’m in the minority on this website, but I think it’s important to note that one’s personal opinion shouldn’t be used as facts.

    Leno did not fail. He lead in the ratings over Letterman for years but it was in his contract for a long time to hand the show over the Conan in 2009. When Conan took over, ratings slipped and Letterman lead in ratings. That’s a fact, not my opinion. Maybe facts like these are real, measurable reasons that NBC is favoring Leno in this debacle.

    Personally, I’m thinking this whole thing is tad bit ridiculous. Everyone’s pulling the same tactic that politicians do where they polarize everything to one side or another. No matter what side you’re on, there’s going to be an equal or greater number of people who disagree with you. In fact, amazingly enough, they’ll probably feel just as strongly about it as you do, too. Making pointless jabs at how unfunny one side or another makes it all very childish. Rather than discrediting the other side, it only discredits yourself.

    There’s obviously much more going on between NBC, Conan, and Leno than just an argument about who’s funny and who’s not, especially since that’s subjective.

    There’s also the possibility that this is just a ploy to get people paying attention to late night network TV again… I’m just saying. If that’s the case, it’s definitely got this site talking about it even though most of us admittedly don’t watch any of them. Suddenly, late night TV is a hot topic again… Perhaps that was the plan all along?
