There aren't many original ideas anymore, while some films certainly have more similarities than others, and I think that if you're going to revamp and tried and true storyline, might as well go all out. One unfortunate thing is that a lot of the opinions made about movies are just on what you see and hear in the theater. As a film student I know that a lot of work, even on small projects, is required for a good product. A hell of a lot of work went into the making of this movie, and storyline aside, it's as masterful as they come. I would call it an archetype. Avatar is getting made fun of the most because it is so obvious, but look at movies like Harry Potter, Star Wars, the Matrix.
