Someone Just Paid $330K for a Space Station. A Virtual Space Station

I’m not sure if this is the dumbest or the most genius thing I’ve ever heard of, but someone has paid $330,000 in real-life dollars for the Crystal Palace space station in Planet Calypso. No, I’ve never heard of it either. There was a frantic bidding war a few days ago, and the “winner” was Buzz “Erik” Lightyear.

Now, before your head starts spinning around, allegedly this could potentially be a big money making investment for Buzz. According to Massively, who knows way more about this shit than I do, “All Buzz has to do is let the station run, set a decent tax rate, keep it stocked with things to hunt, and he can take all the PED he earns and translate it into cold, hard cash.” In other words, the station sells fake items that can be turned into real cash. More than $330,000 worth? I guess that remains to be seen.

Could this be the beginning of an online virtual world real estate boom? If so, I’ll be dumping my life savings to grab the Citadel from Mass Effect.

Didn’t 2nd life do this with their letting people buy islands for real money, plus rent? And all that buying of crap in World of Warcraft?

I never heard of “Planet Calypso”, so I don’t know how popular that is. If you could do the same thing in WoW, you’d probably make your money 10X over.

I think I’m going to go kiss my wife to reaffirm my life is not totally wasted.
