Real Children’s Books That Are Going To Creep You Out
Children’s books are a fickle thing. You need the right blend of lesson teaching but you also need to do it in a way that’s “tasteful.” Like if you’re gonna talk about bullies you have to be “nice” about it.
If you’re going to introduce subjects that involve bad things, you need to massage it a little so that kid understands but not necessarily “understands.” It’s teaching but subliminally.
Unfortunately some authors (and illustrators) don’t really do these things in the best ways. When you see these covers and titles, believe me when I say you’ll know what I mean.

Agree with PotO - I Love You Forever is one of the most beautiful and touching stories. It made me cry when I was just a daughter, and it makes me cry now that I have a child of my own.

I think “Love You Forever” is horribly disturbing. Not only is the arwork bad, but it’s about a neurotic mother who continues to treat her son like a 1-year-old when he’s a grown man. Not a picture of a healthy parent-child relationship.
I Love You Forever is actually kind of creepy - the mom watches the kid while he sleeps and rocks him and stuff. Fine. But then she drives to his house when he’s an adult to do the same. THEN he drives to her house to do the same to her! It gets a little creepy/stalkery/codependent weird in my eyes.
I *loved* The Giving Tree (Shel Silverstein) when I was a kid, but rereading it as an adult I found it kind of upsetting - as if the tree were a woman and the boy/man is a man… and all the tree does is give and that makes her happy! She is stripped of everything by the boy/man and yet is still pleased to be a stump so that he may sit on her… Shel, thank you for Where the Sidewalk Ends and for A Boy Named Sue, but you had issues with women, I think. love you forever is a book, get over it. its fiction…know what else is creepy? star wars, man there are some serious issues in that story too..
Love you Forever is not creepy, it’s a sweet and touching book. And If you Give a Cat a Cupcake… how is that creepy? The only books that seem “creepy” are ones dealing with bodily functions/making babies!
I love you forever creeped me out too! I read it for the first time when I was in high school.
This list is garbage. I’m not creeped out by any of these. And I Love You Forever is a classic. You lose NattyB.
I Love You Forever is a great, great book. A personal favorite.
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ‘83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
Excuse me, but I have to return some videotapes.
Yeah, most of these are not “creepy”. Never Smile at a Monkey is creepy, but also good advice if you don’t want to be attacked and have your ear chewed off.
While I do think the premise of I Love You Forever is touching, it is kinda creepy… A grown man’s mother sneaks into his house by using a ladder and secretly watches him while he’s sleeping - that’s stalker creepy.
Love you forever traumatized me as a child. It just made me think about my paraents being old, dieing, and having to care for them. Not exactly things I could deal with at that age.
The giving tree was hellish too. It just made me feel an immense guilt for being a burden on my paraents.
Seriously, read your kids books about nice, fluffy subjects. Those gave nightmares and I’m sure contributed to the mental issues I had growing up.
Scrolling down this page and seeing love you forever just now sent a chill down my spine, that foul book still obviously affects me.
Um…. I’m a little surprised that the book “When Dinosaurs Die” isn’t on here, especially since it deals with war, suicide and death by “illness” like aids. Aw well.

What about Oliver Button is a Sissy, My Teacher Sleeps in Shool, The man who didn’t wash his dishes and Naughty Nicky? These were all books from the Weekly Reader series and they all were creepy in their own way.
@Chingo- It’s obvious you didn’t really learn how to read, or write. You are a disgrace to…to…well, you’re/your a disgrace. I guess we all better start learning chinese.

lol!! those books look hilarious yet creepy! I can’t believe they’re actually real! whatever happened to just reading good ol’ Maurice Sendak to your kids??
