A Collection of 15 of the Best Video Game Cutscenes Ever

As I played through the campaign mode of Modern Warfare 2 last week, I pondered that video game cutscenes aren’t really going to exist pretty soon. With in-game graphics catching up to cut-scene graphics, a lot of times there’s no real need to break from gameplay to show something truly epic, I thought to myself as I hauled ass across the National Mall dodging helicopters and fighter jets falling from the sky after an EMP pulse.

However, that certainly wasn’t always the case, which is why I’ve assembled this collection of the best video game cutscenes I could find. I haven’t played all these games, as a lot of these were suggestions (thanks Reddit!), but the ones in this list that stayed with me the most was almost anything found in Final Fantasy X, the amazing sing-a-long outro for Portal and the pure evil found in many of the Twisted Metal closing films.

See all those and more below, and if I’ve missed anything, shoot me a link and if I like it, I’ll add it to the list.

1. Red Alert 2 - Intro

2. Metal Gear Solid 4 - Raiden vs. Vamp

3. Final Fantasy X - Sudeki da ne

4. Descent: Freespace - Intro Movie

5. Warcraft III - The Death of Grom Hellscream

6. The Darkness - Jenny’s End

7. Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - Ending

8. Command and Conquer - Kane Disposes of Seth

9. Final Fantasy VII - Aeris’s Death

10. Portal - Still Alive

11. Suikoden III - Intro

12. Homeworld - Intro and Mothership Launch

13. Starcraft - Terran Campaign Ending

14. Twisted Metal Black - Mr. Grimm

15. Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - All Sorts of Awkwardness

The Final Fantasy X cutscenes were just mind blowing. I can’t wait to see the Final Fantasy XIII ones.

well i am glad you included something from ffvii on here. i’ll never forget the first time i saw cloud tearing shit up on a motorcycle in one of the early cut scenes of that game. it was really ahead of its time in my opinion.

Another for the list: the intro sequence of FF8 (Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec).

#15 from Melody of Elemia made me howl. That was so spectacularly awesome I think I must track that game down.

some of the cutscenes for The Legend of Dragoon are amazing…I was a little surprised I didn’t see one of them but I guess not a lot of people have played it…

Put a Legend of Dragoon one up. There was one after you are on a ghost ship about a battle that happened in the past. It ranks with any other FMV from a final fantasy or RPG i can think of.

really this list sucked a big d. there are at least 15 cut scenes with better graphics and more with better plot

    @worstlist ever

Cutscenes don’t need to be graphically great, otherwise only recent scenes can be considered good.

For the Raiden vs. Vamp you have the ffx video again. Also, you miss spelt the title for the ffx video as it is “Suteki da ne” or in other words, isn’t it beautiful

Like Sepirothpk said, cutscenes don´t need to be graphically great, that´s why I think you should add one from Chronno Trigger from SNES, it was a real shock for when i played it the first time. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GueX3ZQA3Q

I still love the cutscene with the first zombie/mutant in the first Resident Evil. Way back then it shocked me pretty good. Wasn’t epic and the graphics were PS1, but yikes.

Although you have some pretty good choices here… I guess you didn’t play Shadow Hearts Covenant.. the cutscenes in that game is above excellent, you should check it out.. check out the scene where they try to revive Alice, it will blow your mind.

The Onimusha series had very beautiful intro cinematics.
