We’ve Come a Long Way Since Star Wars

It’s extremely hard to believe that in the 70s and 80s little tiny models were used in special effects. There was no such thing as CGI. A green screen? What the hell is that? And blue screens were barely used save for the news and weather.
How the hell did movies even get by back then? Well, by doing things that at the time weren’t done. Still though, it’s hard to believe that in these times all you need is a wacky magnetic suit, a computer screen and you have yourself an interactive scene filled with monsters and stuff.
Time really does fly. Who knows what the 2005 “then” and 2027 “now” photo will look like.

hehe very true. just this minute I watched the last TED talk on their site, which happened to be about Paul animation of photo-real digital faces and I really couldn’t tell the difference betreen real and animation in the example. the future is allways now
I’m just waiting for the first 360-degree, 3-D movie. Of course it’s going to happen.

Though CG has come a long way, there is something about miniatures and other practical effects that have more “magic” to them. I’m personally a fan of movies that use practical effects whenever possible, and use CG to augment them. The LOTR and Hellboy movies are some great examples.
