A Logical Defense of the Endless ‘Saw’ Series

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies

saw-movie.jpg

I’m growing tired of the chorus of people crying about how the Saw series needs to die. I thought I was alone in this, but someone over at HorrorSquad shares my beliefs, and wrote a rather interesting defense of the films, part of which I’d like to share.

It’s a Serial!

The massively popular, horror-centric, and entirely silly True Blood is discussed like it’s the reinvention of the vampire. (It’s not. But it’s good.) So far there have been 24 60-minute episodes of True Blood, which equals 1,440 minutes. By comparison the first five Saw films equal about 475 minutes. My point is this: Why should we hear cries of “enough!” on one and “ooooh, more please!” on another? Do the horror geeks not deserve their own equivalent of an “unending” soap opera? Is it fair that people bemoan a Saw 6 yet sit down for General Hospital … every day for 15 years??

So yeah, it’s like a long running TV show that doesn’t get canceled because frankly, tons of people are still tuning in. If you could make a movie that cost under $10M and was guaranteed to make $100M, you’d never stop doing it either, which is the next point the writer makes in his article. Go here to read the rest.

Really Jackie Chan?

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies

spy-next-door.jpg

In my sequel article to “Really Clive Owen?” I now present to you, “Really Jackie Chan?” I understand the man is getting older, and maybe can’t kick quite as much ass as he used to, but that’s no reason to start turning into The Rock and doing horrendously concieved children’s movies like this one. The Karate Kid remake is bad enough, but this? It’s a whole different level.

Why are action stars feeling the need to pacify themselves just to be in terrible kids movies like this. It worked ONE TIME for Vin Diesel in The Pacifier (and that’s debatable), it does not mean it’s an idea to be repeated. This even have the same freaking “wacky animal” addition. Come on!

Super Mario Proposal Still Doesn’t Prove Geeks Have Sex

Published by Nattyb under News

From the actual Youtube page of this video:

My nerdy way to propose. On October 15th 2009, it was out 5 year anniversary so i decided to propose. Using a program called lunar magic I was able to spell “lisa… Will you marry me?” she may not look too surprised in the video but you should of seen her afterwords, she couldn’t sit still!!! And no it wasn’t staged, but I did sit her down told her to play some Super Mario World, but she totally didn’t know she was being recorded!!

There are any number of things that could have gone on after the proposal.  My guess is that she said “Yes, let’s finish the game.”  Although there are probably a couple of alternatives like these:

“No, could you be any more of a dork?  How did I ride this out for five years?”

“I’ve been having an affair with someone who actually has a penis.  Goodbye.”

Seriously folks.  I guess congratulations on the proposal but I’m about 99% sure this isn’t exactly the kind of couple I’d want to go out on a double date with.

When All Schools Have a Video Game Curriculum, What Should the Classes Be?

Published by Nattyb under Video Games

Video Game Curriculum

About a month ago, a school in New York launched a curriculum based on playing games.

Select sixth graders can look forward to playing video games such as “Little Big Planet” and “Civilization,” as well as non-digital games ranging from role-playing scenarios to board games and card games

New York City education officials certainly hope that the school can represent the tip of a “transformative” revolution, according to Metropolis. Q2L will start with sixth graders and add a grade each year until it reaches the high school senior level

Sounds pretty awesome to me.   But what classes should be offered in this new curriculum?  Luckily we have some nice suggestions for you.

Unreal Movie Review: Law Abiding Citizen

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies,Reviews

law1.jpg

Law Abiding Citizen is a film flying completely under the radar at the moment, drowned out due to the sounds of children’s screams exiting Where the Wild Things Are this weekend. But ignoring its seemingly unoriginal plot and massive pile of negative reviews, it’s a film that actually does a lot of cool things, ends up being highly entertaining, and is dangerously close to being a great film.

A man’s home is invaded, his house robbed and his wife and daughter murdered in front of him. But when the pair of killers is arrested, one makes a deal with the prosecutor to get off easy, while the other goes to death row. This doesn’t sit well with the father (Gerard Butler) and he spends the next ten years plotting up the world’s most elaborate revenge scheme against the criminals, the prosecutor (Jamie Foxx) and all the other court officials and government appointees involved.

He quickly dispatches of his family’s killers in particularly brutal ways, but things really turn wonky once he’s in prison, yet other people start dying anyways. It’s all part of his insanely complicated plan he’s been setting up for years, thanks in part due to a secret supply of black-ops skills which are normally employed to assassinate foreign dignitaries from a thousand miles away.

Where the Wild Things Are is Anything But a Cliched Movie for Kids

Published by Madison under Movies,Reviews

 wild-things.jpg

Writing a review of Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are is going to be pretty difficult.  I imagine that Jonze’s film is will prove to be quite polarizing, with about half the people opining that Jonze failed to capture the atmosphere contained in Maurice Sendak’s children’s book, and the other half praising the film for its uncompromising presentation of adolescence and the uncertainty that comes with it.  Fortunately, Paul is going to review WTWTA for its merits as a film.  Instead of writing a traditional review, I’m going to try my best to address the film’s central messages, none of which struck me as particularly uplifting.  Very minor spoilers ahead.
