British People Love to Lie About Seeing Movies, Especially “The Godfather” Series

Have you ever lied about seeing a movie? I can’t really recall any reason I’d ever have done so. Maybe to get someone off my back but even then I’m pretty sure I haven’t. The Brits on the other hand….
A survey suggests “The Godfather” and its sequels are the classic films Britons are the most likely to claim to have seen without actually watching the movies.
The survey, conducted by Orange mobile phone company, found one in five respondents admitted telling people they had seen Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar-winning 1972 film and is sequels despite having never seen them, The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday
Twenty percent huh? Wow. Other movies they also lied about seeing? Rocky, Dirty Dancing, Shawshank Redemption, Gone with the Wind, and Citizen Cane. Has anyone heard of this? Am I missing something here?
Like, is this part of their culture? And I’ll do my best to be delicate with phonetics. Is a mother saying to her children
“Whot eva yu do, downt leht those peopoll theenk yew’ve nevah seen the following movies….” Is this like a rite of passage for the youth of Britain.? As long as people think you’ve seen Godfather you’re in the clear?
Man I wish life were that simple.

I actually used to lie about having seen The Godfather. Then I saw it, so now I’m telling the truth.
Also, it’s “Citizen Kane” not “Citizen Cane”.
Haha your accent is spot on.
Well, let me shine upon this subject with my view. Yeah British btw.
I think some of this article could be interpreted as true (and no I’m not talking about the god awful impression…which actually wasn’t that god awful) for let me explain.
I know one or two instances where friends and definitely myself have quoted or made reference to movies that we haven’t actually seen, but leave the impression that we’ve seen them nevertheless.
e.g. *Haha! We should tie you down and force you to watch this by strapping your eyes open just like in Clockwork Orange*
I haven’t even seen Clockwork Orange, even though I want to, but I’ll make reference to it all the same, I’m sure you guys over the pond do the same. But yeah if you are sad enough to say you’ve seen a film that you haven’t just to seem ‘enlightened’ to the world of cinematography just to make yourself look smart, well then, you’re just a posh stuck-up git.
