I’m not terribly sure what the obsession is with “horde mode” in every game under the sun. I believe it started with Left 4 Dead, with Survival Mode. Then Gears‘ Horde Mode came along. Now Mass Effect released a new DLC pack with an (incredibly easy) version of the same thing. Now the latest is Halo ODST‘s Firefight mode, where you and your friends team up to kick a bunch of alien ass, surviving waves of increasingly hard baddies.

I don’t know why, but these kinds of mode just don’t appeal to me. I think they work sometimes, like in L4D when the A.I. is actually smart, but I’ve never known Halo‘s Brutes to be particularly bright. I also have never been a big fan of Halo‘s skulls, whose “difficultly multipliers” are often just kind of stupid.

Anyways, I’m fully buying this game anyways, because I’m a Halo slave. Oh well, I made my stand for a second there.

I think it was Unreal Tournament 2003 or 2004 that had “horde mode” first.
