‘Starcraft 2′ Reveals the Most Insane Map Editor Ever
Ah, now I get it. Now I know why Starcraft 2 has been pushed back for the better part of a decade. It’s not unit balancing or single-player campaign writing, it’s the damn map editor, which is usually a fairly throwaway feature in most games, but here? Oh man, just watch.
Most of you may remember the map editor from the first Starcraft, where the best things you could do was stacking minerals on top of each other or changing Kerrigan’s name to NAKED Kerrigan, but not so in the new game.
Sure there’s a map editor, but there’s also a unit editor where you can craft your own units (in the video, behold the Uberlisk). That would be pretty cool by itself, but as Billy Mays would say, “But wait, there’s more!”
For some absolutely unknown reason, Blizzard decided to let you play the game as a third person shooter a-la-Gears of War. In the video we get a glimpse of what Starcraft Ghost would have looked like, and I have a feeling a few different projects have been rolled up into this game over the years, including that one Finally we end with a Galaga-type game that also seems fun, yet exceedingly out of place.
I don’t know how necessary or cool these last two features are. The Ghost portion looked more like an iPhone shooter, and I’m not exactly sure why you’d ever want to make a Starcraft Galaga game. Maybe in the hands of a million modders we can get some cool stuff out of this, but until then, I’ll stick with the awesome unit editor.
