For Better or Worse, the ‘Avatar’ Trailer is Here
At long last, the Avatar trailer has finally debuted, and it’s a bevvy of mixed emotions for me. My initial thought was to be underwhelmed. Despite being excellently rendered in CGI, the Na’vi are still very much CGI, and half the trailer ends up looking like a 3D version of Ferngully. It’s strange, but with it’s $30 million budget, the aliens in District 9 almost felt more real.
But that being said, I understand I am viewing this thing on my laptop monitor, and not a five story tall IMAX screen in glorious 1080p 3D. I have a feeling that when put all together, the experience of the movie will be so overwhelming that you’ll forget all about realism or unrealism, and you’ll be completely absorbed by it within the first fifteen minutes or so.
This has always been a risk the movie has run, how do you display glorious 3D tech when you can only do it once people are in the theater? I guess that’s the point of “Avatar Day” where you can get IMAX tickets to go see the footage, but as we know, that turned out to be a complete disaster.
I think no trailer is truly going to capture the experience until the movie is released, and even though I’m a bit disappointed, I think we’re still going to be in for something revolutionary when December rolls around.

I think you need to look past how things look in this trailer. They still are not done with the film and I am sure things will improve with the aliens before Christmas time. And, like you said, these are being designed to be viewed at larger than life scales and the detail of these things are getting downsized and losing quality on laptop screens. If only they hadn’t canceled my reservation for tickets tomorrow night. Damn them.
@ Josh
Exactly what you said. One is supposed to be fully immersed into Avatar, not simply “watch” it. No way can a trailer do the final movie any justice.
I went to see the 15 minute preview on Imax yesterday. I saw the trailer before I went so i could compare them and I gotta say if you dont see this on IMAX then you are btter off not seeing it at all. I cant wait till DEcember when it starts showing.. Its gonna be awesome!
