True Blood Episode 2.8 Review

On Episode 2.8 of True Blood, the storylines of many characters intersected, while others (looking at you, Tara & Eggs) continued to carry on.  This was the series’ most vampire-heavy episode, and we got to learn a bit more about Godric, including his relationship with Eric.  It seems as though the Fellowship of the Sun story arc reached a temporary conclusion, or at the very least a slight hiatus.  Keep reading for the full review.*

First thing’s first.  I think the “mystery” of who was grabbing Barry and who was dashing out of the hotel room has been answered.  Clearly, Lorena snatched Barry, right after Eric sped away from the vampire hotel.  It was Eric who freed Godric (off screen, apparently), and so it should come as no surprise that Godric was able to locate Sookie quickly.  After a brief hesitation, Godric snapped Gabe’s neck (good).  Eric then appeared before his Maker, who ordered him to escort Sookie off the Fellowship premises but without spilling any blood.  At this point in the episode, I was a bit disappointed with Godric.  Why couldn’t he unleash Eric on the Fellowship?  As it turns out, Godric is pretty lame.  Powerful, yes, but lame.

Godric is actually so old that he claims to have met Jesus (and really, isn’t Godric, with his sense of forgiveness a sort of vampire Jesus?), but for some reason has grown to respect human beings, even to the point of wanting them to be considered the equals to vampires.  Godric claimed that the Fellowship actually treated him rather kindly, which makes no sense considering houw zealous Steve Newlin is.  Further, after witnessing thousands of years of genocide, slavery, and war, Godric likes humans?  I’ve been around for 31 years and I’m already sick of them.  To say I’m disappointed with how Godric turned out may be an understatement.  I’m hoping he’s not a regular on the show.

As most of you predicted, Sarah Newlin shot Jason not with a bullet, but with a paintball gun.  She screamed and carried on like a maniac about giving everything up to be with him, but once she started talking sh*t about Sookie, Jason put his foot down.  Sarah had spilled the beans about the Fellowship’s plan, so Jason, armed with paintball guns, headed to the Church to try and free his sister.  Jason may be stupid, but he’s loyal and brave (except for, I guess, when he hit Sookie last season.  Oops.).

There’s a big showdown at the Church, and even Bill is there; he was able to free himself from Lorena while she was distracted feeding on Barry.  How?  By smashing her on the head with a plasma television.  Nice.  The Dallas vampires show up, ready to take on the Fellowship’s warriors and Steve Newlin, before Jason arrives and shoots Steve in the hand and head with a paintball gun.  It looks like things are going to get real messy, but then Godric shows up, orders everyone to stop, and ruins all the fun.  What a downer.  Later, when presented with Hugo the traitor, Godric allows him to run free.  Look, I understand forgiveness, but this guy sold you all out knowing that it would likely kill you.  Sookie humiliates Lorena in front of everyone, and Jason and Eric have a surreal moment at which you can’t help but smile.  I love that Eric likes Jason, undoubtedly admiring his courage and willingness to fight.  Just when things look like they’ve totally died down, though, Luke shows up with a silver-laced suicide bomb strapped to his chest.  And that’s where we end.

As for everyone else?  Well, Hoyt and Jessica have the frustrating realization that Jessica will remain forever a virgin, due to her parts (read: hymen) healing after sex.  A nice topic to explore, I guess, but it reminded me just a bit of Interview with the Vampire.

Lafayette gets minimal screen time this week.; he shows Tara her future using Tarot cards (Lafeyette: Internet entrepreneur,  cook, drug dealer, prostitute, and now, fortune teller).  Did anyone else catch him stating something about a sacrifice and the heart?  Why, that couldn’t possibly be an allusion to Maryann, could it.  Speaking of Maryann, the maenad made a meal of Daphne’s heart and fed it to Tara and Eggs.  They relished every bit of it, got to slapping each other, and then had sex on the floor.  Meanwhile, Sam is locked up in jail due to the authorities finding Daphne’s body in his restaurant, and Andy is the only one who can vouch for him.  Unfortunately, everyone still thinks Andy is a drunk who’s out of his mind.  I think the Maryann storyline will get wrapped up next week.  Let’s hope so; it’s starting to drag.

What did you all think?  How’d you feel about Godric?  Disappointed like me?  Let me know.

I don’t believe that Godric claimed to have met Jesus; he claimed that he was older, but that Jesus’ missed his time. Nonetheless, I agree with your assessment of Godric as a Vampire Jesus figure.

  2. Chloeon 11 Aug 2009 at 9:45 am

He missed Jesus’ time, rather. Words are hard.

Are you sure you watched the right episode, Madison?

    - It was Eric who freed Godric (off screen, apparently)
: Eric was surprised to see Godric with Sookie, and before that Godric was still sensing who was coming. In my understanding Godric was a “prisioner” by his own free will, that he could free himself at any time, he just stood there because they “weren’t treating me that bad” and was hoping to avoid a bloodshed.

    - Godric is actually so old that he claims to have met Jesus
: He clearly said the contrary: he missed the chance to meet him and regret that.

Anyways, I think Godric is great. He just saw enough bloodshed in those millenia, and it must be a new time for him since now human society knows vampires, and he’s trying to set an example of coexistence. But, in my opinion, we can be assured he won’t last, these types of high-morale-martyr characters are made to die soon.

I thought it was kinda cool that Godric was the “Jesus” type vampire. This opens up the obvious storyline of a vampire rebellion as you know the other vamps won’t put up with his hippie bullshit for long.

All in all, another solid episode. I’m really digging this show. Speaking of Sunday HBO, I’m really digging Hung as well.

Well, i actually liked Godric, he didnt show that rage and rush every vampire has, he just stand quiet and command orders, he wasnt a blood thirsty S.O.B that kills everyone on his way.

But i cant give a 100% possitive welcome to Godric because we just saw him in a chapter so far.. and his character wasnt so damn interesting.

The cliffhanger was good, but kinda obvious the outcome sookie, jason, eric, bill, godric and others survive or someone manage to stop the suicide bomb Luke..

The maryaans-sam plot is the most interesting for me ( but the orgies and that crazy black eyes every fck chapter are kinda annoying..) i want to see what would happend in bon temps that will make Bill ask help from vampire queen of louisiana.

I agree that Godric is pretty cool. He is basically a passive bad ass. He will get screwed over in the end by the cowboy vampire though. I think your assessment of the Jesus parrell seems pretty spot on. I am hoping that it leads to an all out war, and hopefully not a bulid up for nothing.

Also Chole was right. He said he was around before Jesus, and would have liked to have met him.

I liked the scene where Eric talked to Jason too. It was funny when he smirked when Jason walked away.

Tara and Eggs thing is getting boring and redundant, but overall it was pretty good episode

I forgot about the queen. If I had to guess though I would say it would be due to the beef brewing between Bill and Eric over Sookie

  8. Madisonon 11 Aug 2009 at 12:33 pm

    @ Fernando Malk

Uh, you’re right? So why was Godric out and about with no supervision? Was he ever even “captured?” I really feel like I’m missing something. He was “captured,” then, in the sense that he didn’t put up a fight and went with them, then?

    @ Chloe

I remember now, he didn’t meet Jesus, but he is older than him.

    @IcemanD

I do like the Jesus angle with Godric; I think it’s an interseting dynamic to explore. My only problem is that someone who has been aroundd that long, IMO, would see the true ugliness of man.

    @ryan

I’m also hoping for a war. Enough of this holding hands, let’s all get along crap.

Godric’s motives seem a little fishy to me. First, there’s the whole situation about Godric sparing everyone (except for Gabriel) who was responsible for his capture. He even spared Steve and Hugo, both of whom did the most grievous crimes against him, in my opinion. Yet, this decision to spare human life comes just weeks after he let the vampires in his jurisdiction kill Steve Newlin’s father, stepmother, and brother. Why the sudden change of heart? Or had he already been captured by the Newlins, or perhaps he didn’t have the authority to condemn the act? Next, before Godric killed Gabriel, Gabriel said to him, “Godric, it’s me,” as though that were supposed to make him spare his life. It seems overly chummy to me, like Godric’s captors not only didn’t treat him badly, but they were friends. Do vampires get Stockholm Syndrome? Next, as others have observed, Godric seems to have been loose in the basement, since Eric didn’t arrive until later and couldn’t have set him free. Why wouldn’t the Newlins keep Godric chained up? And if he wasn’t chained up that entire time, why wouldn’t he have rescued Hugo and Sookie long before Gabriel went crazy and tried to rape Sookie? All my above points add up to one question: Is Godric conspiring with the Newlins? Could he, too, want to start a war, but not be directly responsible?

There are a couple other minor details that have been bugging me. Remember when Maryann made the patrons and workers at Merlotte’s gang up on Tara? Her powers appeared to work on everyone equally. BUT, Daphne later told Sam that Maryann’s powers wouldn’t work on them because they’re supernatural. What gives? Lastly, I thought vampires could “smell” betrayal on a human. If a human treated a vampire poorly, they would be able to tell. If this is true, then how come nobody ever smelled it on Hugo?

    @ Major

Great comment. I don’t really get Godric either. His behavior seems very inconsistent. And it did seem as if he and Gabe knew each other. If we wasn’t really held prisoner, and due to his inconsistent behavior, then it does seem likely he’s conspiring with the Newlins. That, at least, would make some sense.

Can vampires sense betrayal? I don’t remember that – is that a general vampire thing, or a True Blood thing?

As far as Maryann’s powers go, I think they affect all humans equally, that’s all.

  11. Hey Lady!on 11 Aug 2009 at 2:10 pm

I agree with Major, there are a lot of questions about Godric, and I somehow doubt they all will be answered. Perhaps Godric just wants to “love everyone and live in harmony” and just hangs out with the Fellowship? Sounds strange.

Another thing that seems strange to me, is that Godric is the sheriff of area 6 or Dallas or whatever, and EVERYONE follows him and shows him the respect you would expect from someone holding that position. So, if sheriffs command that type of respect and servitude then why is Bill able to defy Eric? Why does he argue and talk back to Eric and Eric puts up with it? I noticed the same type of respect shown to that guy over seeing the “vampire legal precedings” last season got that level of respect as well. Not sure if he was a sheriff though. The relationship between Eric and Bill seems inconsistent with the way they paint vampire sheriffs to be.

  12. xenoirishon 11 Aug 2009 at 5:21 pm

Perhaps the respect given to Godric is more because of his age and power rather then his position?

Also Bill doesn’t trust Eric, so he’s bound to try and assert himself.

At 2000+ years is Godric one of the oldest? Should he maybe have more power than being the sheriff of Dallas? Dallas seems like an odd place for an ancient vampire, that has probably seen the entire world, to settle down in. I’m not knocking Dallas, just saying.

I like the character so far, he is mysterious and isn’t super violent like most would figure him to be. That being said, i really want to see him get pushed to far so we can see what he is capable of.

I am also sick of the maryann story line….end it already and get back to being about humans and vampires……..and the guy that can turn into animals.

  13. Lauraon 11 Aug 2009 at 6:34 pm

I just love how loyal Jason is to Sookie. He had too many good lines last night. And I can’t believe you didn’t put the best one it, when Steve called Sookie the “evil whore of satan”. I had to rewind that it mad me laugh so hard. Those church people are ridiculous.

Ummm I don’t know about you, but if I cut in to a souffle looking thing that started to BLEED, I wouldn’t be so apt as to eat it.

    More Lafayette please.

  14. Madisonon 11 Aug 2009 at 8:16 pm

    @ Laura

This was one of Jason’s better episodes. He’s great. My favorite part was easily the exchange he had with Eric, and Eric being unable to hold back his smile.

  15. kekeon 12 Aug 2009 at 1:53 am

@Major – I agree completely with the fishyness surrounding Godric’s capture. Maybe he snapped Gabe’s neck to keep him from revealing something?

I loved all the smirks and smiles from Eric this episode. He’s been showing a lot of emotion lately- especially the concern he shows to Godric’s feeding frequency.

I have a feeling Godric might sacrifice himself to save everyone and push Luke into the pool or something. That guy can’t last very long if he keeps the same attitude.

  16. Majoron 12 Aug 2009 at 3:57 pm

@Madison: If I remember correctly, Eric and his posse strolled into Merlotte’s in one of the episodes from Season 1 to hand out fliers for Fangtasia. Pam was about to give a flier to one of the guys who set fire to that nest (the one the coroner’s apprentice died in), but Eric stopped her and then said that the guy had betrayed vampires before. He could smell it on him. I wish I remembered the episode number.

Also, I remember somebody saying that Godric had the opportunity to be king of Texas, but he didn’t take it. His age really makes me wonder how old the spokeswoman of the vampire coming out movement is. She’s gotta be even older…right?

  17. Madisonon 12 Aug 2009 at 4:10 pm

    @ Major

I remember that. But wasn’t Eric’s statement also directed toward Amy? He gave her a scary glance after saying so. Maybe he was just trying to scare everyone.

That was one of my favorite scenes, btw. I especially loved when Eric got in the kid’s face and called him “breh.”

I’m not quite sure how vampire power works – so far, it seems to be based soley on age. I wonder if there’s more to it than that. And a lot of the vampires don’t like the vampire spokeswomen; they felt they were better off when their identities were secret. Maybe she’s able to do what she’s doing becayse of her age/power. I’m sure it’ll be revealed soon enough; I know we’re bound to see a Queen.

  18. Bobbyon 13 Aug 2009 at 11:38 pm

all i wanna know is why r dallas vampires so antihuman when their leader is so into coexistance. now that major made me think of it, i agree that godrics shit is kinda fishy. he waits for gabe to beat the fuck outta luke and almost rape sookie to then jump out of nowhere, kill him and tell eric to avoid blood or whatever.

and how come they didnt smell/feel/see luke when he entered the house with all his anitvampireness? same shit with hugo.

  19. Madisonon 14 Aug 2009 at 11:21 am

    @ Bobby

I can only imagine that Godric is up to something. Otherwise, there seem to be a lot of inconsistencies.

    Thanks for reading.
