The 10 Best Celebrity Appearances on ‘Extras’
Let it be known that Extras is one of my favorite comedies ever, and I even like it more than Gervais’ Office, which will shock many. It wasn’t a perfect show, but I laughed more in its two short seasons than most people did during According to Jim’s entire nine year run.
The show did celebrity guest spots better than any other program before it (or after it). This is likely because a stipulation of self-parody was almost always enforced, and having the actors play more pompous, clueless versions of themselves was almost always pure comic gold.
Here are my ten favorite spots. If I’ve missed a glaringly obvious one shout it out, but I think all the best ones are in there.
10) Ben Stiller
This is from the pilot where I think the show was still trying to figure out what to with their celebrity guests. I think Stiller’s assholery is a bit over the top, but it makes for some good scenes nonetheless.
9) Robert DeNiro
Probably the most understated guest spot on the show, but it’s all about the pen.
Ian McKellen
Not one of my favorite episodes, but McKellen is great here.
7) Chris Martin
Him busting out the T-shirt during the commercial is amazing.
6) Clive Owen
Leave it to Clive Owen to be the actor to finally make Maggie quit being an extra.
5) Kate Winslet
This self parody was almost sad, as Winslet bemoans not winning an Oscar, but she’s got one now so it’s OK.
4) David Bowie
I still sing this sometimes to my chubby friend. I’m pretty mean.
3) Orlando Bloom
I came out with a lot more respect for Bloom after this bit. And by “a lot more” I mean “some.”
2) Daniel Radcliffe
Such adult humor from such a little boy. The condom bit is classic.
1) Patrick Stewart
This clip isn’t just Extras famous, it’s worldwide famous, as Stewart explains his idea for a film that involves ladies and the unexpected removal of their clothing.

That Patrick Stewart clip makes me die laughing every time. Also, I think most nerdy ladies wouldn’t mind him removing our clothes with his mind….just saying.
It’s unnerving watching Radcliffe in that clip. Sometimes it’s hard to see him as anything but Harry Potter.
