He adapated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as the Gene Wilder film was not a only loosely based on the novel. Burton's remake was incredibly faithful to the book. And I like how you put it: Burton Burton-izes the imagery and kind of neglects all the other aspects of what makes a great film. This was apparent in his remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, whereas Edward Scissorhands, even though it had all the great visuals, was heavy on soul. Agree.
