What’s in ‘The Box’ Trailer?

Published by Paul Tassi at 1:00 pm under Movies, Trailers

You know Richard Kelly, he’s the guy who made Donnie Darko a cult classic a decade ago, then had his second movie feature deformed, drunk Justin Timberlake singing The Killers as The Rock did an erotic ballroom dance with Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Well, now he’s back with something slightly more mainstream. The Box is a Twilight Zone-ish story of a couple who get a visit from a mysterious stranger who gives them a box. If they push the button on the box, they get a million dollars, but someone in the world they don’t know will die. And then it seems there’s also decidedly more to it than that.

I think the trailer is a sufficiently good mix of Richard Kelly creepiness and regular creepiness, and I do look forward to this project will I hopefully won’t have to hunt down in art theaters. Though it loses points for A) Cameron Diaz’s accent and B) the use of the Saw theme at the end.

Man, Kelly is frustrating. I thought parts of Southland Tales were absolutely brilliant, while other parts were laughably bad. The movie as a whole is a trainwreck. I’ll give The Box a shot, simply because Kelly is pretty good when he pulls himself together.

Oh, come on! This was the plot of an episode of one of the countless Twilight Zone / Tales From the Darkside / Outer Limits shows that were big in the 80s and 90s. I forget which one.

Come back to this spot after you see the movie, here’s my prediction. After much hand-wringing, etc., one of them (let’s say Diaz) pushes the button, the stranger shows up, hands them the cash and takes the box back. Then he tells them he’s going to give the box to someone else, and when that new person pushes the button, then Diaz will die.
