The 20 Best Comedies of the Last 10 Years

Published by at 9:00 am under Lists,Movies

 2003_old_school_002.jpg

Last week, Paul brought you the 10 best horror films of the past 10 years.  I’m not a huge horror buff, probably because I’m afraid of my own shadow and movies like The Ring force me to sleep with the light on.  No, I prefer comedies: I’d rather wet myself from laughing instead of out of fear.  To follow up Paul’s article last week, I decided to rank the best comedies from the past 10 years.  After considering all the comedies in that time range, I realized that there were many that I simply didn’t want to leave off.  As such, I’ve gone ahead and ranked the 20 best comedies of the past 10 years.  Naturally, I don’t expect everyone to agree with my choices, and I’m pretty sure some of you will question my sense of humor and my intelligence as well.  No worries, kids.  This list wasn’t easy to make.  After the jump, take a look at the 20 best comedies of the past 10 years, ranked in descending order.

Also, I think that since humor is so subjective, it’s pointless to write why each of the top 20 movies is so funny.  Chances are if you disagree with me, you’re not going to change your mind; if you agree with me, well, all you’ll do is nod and picture me naked.  I’ve included one of my favorite quotes from each of the movies instead.

Finally, there’s no Wes Anderson movies on this list.  Not because they aren’t funny – they are – but because I don’t consider his films true comedies.  They’re a bit more than that.  OK, enough babbling.  On with the rankings…

 20) Wedding Crashers

wedding-crashers2.jpg

Mom!  The meatloaf!  F*ck!!!!

19) Road Trip

tom_green_road_trip_001.jpg

It’s not cheating if you spread peanut butter on your balls and let your dog lick it off.

18) Forgetting Sarah Marshall

forgetting-sarah-marshall1.jpg

You sound like you’re from London!

17) Best in Show

best.jpg

Man, I tell you something, if you live in my neighborhood and you’re dressed like that, you’d better be a hotel doorman.

16) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

borat-movie-6.jpg

The Jews have shifted their shapes!

15) American Pie

americanpie.jpg

We’ll just tell your mother we ate it all.

14) Anchorman

anchorman-1.jpg

Dammit. Who typed a question mark on the Teleprompter?

13) Office Space

office-space.jpg

Oh, oh, and I almost forgot. Ahh, I’m also gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too…

12) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

jason_mewes1.jpg

Yeah, I wasn’t a big fan either… but Affleck was the bomb in “Phantoms”.

11) Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

harold-kumar-battleshits.jpg

I made some love stains in the back. You’ll see..

10) The Hangover

hang.jpg

It’s Phil, leave a message. But don’t text me. It’s gay.

9) Hot Rod

andy-samberg-hot-rod.jpg

7) Zoolander

zoolander460.jpg

They’re breakdance fighting!

6) Tropic Thunder

tropic-thunder.jpg

Well to the man’s credit, he has eased up on the retard throttle.

5) Superbad

superbad_fogell1.jpg

This guy is either gonna think ‘Here’s another kid with a fake ID’ or ‘Here’s McLovin, a 25 year-old Hawaiian organ donor’. Okay? So what’s it gonna be?

4) Bad(der) Santa

suicidebads.jpg

I’ve been to prison once, I’ve been married – twice. I was once drafted by Lyndon Johnson and had to live in shit-ass Mexico for 21/2 years for no reason. I’ve had my eye socket punched in, a kidney taken out and I got a bone-chip in my ankle that’s never gonna heal. I’ve seen some pretty shitty situations in my life, but nothing has ever sucked more ass than this.

3) Meet the Parents

meet.jpg

I have nipples, Greg.  Could you milk me?

2) Old School

old_school_blue_l.jpg

Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we’re going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don’t know, I don’t know if we’ll have enough time.

1) Super Troopers

andre_vippolis2.jpg

Farva’s number one!!!!  Farva’s number one!!!!

Just missed: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Van Wilder, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, Pineapple Express, Stepbrothers

How would you have ranked these?  Any you felt deserved to be in the Top 20 that weren’t?  Let me know in the comments section.  To really get your point across, make sure to call me names and insult my intelligence.  It gets me off.

    My thoughts -

    Absolute must haves:

    Shaun of the Dead
    Hot Fuzz
    The 40-Year Old Virgin
The Royal Tennenbaums (It is a comedy)
    South Park

Would be on my own list:

    Galaxy Quest
    Knocked Up
    Amelie
    Clerks 2
    Death to Smoochy
Napoleon Dynamite (the equivalent of putting Blair Witch on my horror list)

    This list:

Eurotrip should replace Road Trip (Scotty doesn’t know!)
Nice inclusion of Best in Show
Office Space is easily top 5
Super Troopers, though underrated, is like #13 at the highest
    I hate Bad Santa

Things people will complain about but shouldn’t:

    Juno
    Little Miss Sunshine
    Sideways
And no one mention The Big Lebowski because it was 1998

  • Noun Mouse

I’m cool with most of them (although South Park should have been in the top ten). The only one I have a problem with is Tropic Thunder. I don’t know if it was the crowd that I saw it with, or the atmosphere, or what. But I found it so ridiculously un-funny that I was actually angry at how bad it was. Like, the film pushed me in the complete opposite direction that it wanted me to go. I was really fucking angry, and I don’t know why. First movie to ever elicit such a response from me.

  • Andy

Wet Hot American Summer = #1 (I’m surprised The Ten made it instead).

But then I again, I would put Freddy Got Fingered as #2, so my opinion probably does not count to a lot of people.

  • Joey

three movies with ben stiller in the top ten…??? really???

maybe i just dont like him, but i find none of those movies “top 10″ worthy.

  • Mr Cinema

I just don’t see how Hot Rod could be on there and not something hilarious and fresh like Sex Drive instead to take its place.

  • Caleigh

I am actually very happy that Hot Rod is on here. I laughed so hard when i saw it, due to the complete ridiculousness of it. I think it is very underrated.

  • Q8248494

That’s a pretty awesome list. My only real complaint is that Step Brothers was in the “just missed” section. I really don’t understand how that movie was even made. It’s one of the very few movies that I’ve ever walked out on.

The only movie that I would have added is Waiting. Drastically underrated movie.

  • WakyWizerdX

    DODGE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Laura

I love you for the fact that you put “You sound like you’re from London!!” as the quote from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. That is the major one I use because Paul Rudd (Kunu) can do no wrong. Kudos.

Great number 1 pick. The next person who says Shenanigans is gonna get pistol whipped!! There are soo many more to quote.

  • Josh

I’d make a case for Accepted. Hilarious movie. Also would like to say that Hot Rod should be higher on the list, as should The Hangover

  • http://unrealitymag.com Parker Jammstein

    No Caddyshack? WTF

  • http://unrealitymag.com Parker Jammstein

    sorry im dumb disregard that
but for superbad once people realize that michael cera plays the exact damn character in everything he does it’ll lose ground, that is if jonah hill doesn’t deliver more.

  • Mike

REALLY!!!!! The Hangover…….I liked it and all but it wasnt EXACTLY what i expected…..I believe step brothers should have taken the hangovers part for sure

  • Paul

i’m not crazy about apatow. 40 yr old virgin was very funny, though.

superbad annoyed the hell out of me. it was like a Three’s Company episode. the whole movie was about finding ways to make absolutely sure no one got laid and they all learned the valuable lesson that women are people, too. (i’m cool w/ the lesson, but imagine how shocking it would have been if everyone actually got laid! you can be funny and score, too.)

forgetting sarah marshall had a good story. but jason segel was cardboard. i could not get into the movie because i did not give a rip what happened to him.

jay and silent bob was a wretched piece of you-know-what. the whole movie was leftovers from much better movies, and it was the beginning of the end for kevin smith.

zoolander, tropic thunder, wedding crashers were great (note that wedding crashers proves that it’s OK to have a character get laid, even if he don’t respect her in the morning). anchorman was cool, too. bad santa was fantastic.

  • Madison

    @ Andy:

I’ve only seen Wet Hot American Summer once, but yeah, it was really funny. I’m sure with another viewing I could be convinced.

    @ Joey:

I’m not a huge Stiller fan, either. I just think he has happened to be in some real funny movies. He’s a better writer/director than he is comedic actor, but his act in Meet the Parents was original at the time, before he repeated it every other movie.

I’m really glad that people seem to appreciate Hot Rod. I thought for sure I’d get skewered for that one.

  • Lydia

Terrible list… Not only should half the movies not be on there (Road Trip? Meet the Parents? Hot Rod?), but you’ve excluded some of the absolute FUNNIEST movies ever!! 40 Year Old Virgin? Step Brothers? Dodgeball? I Love You, Man? Hot Fuzz? Shaun of the Dead?

    Top 5 (in MY world)

    1) Borat
    2) Step Brothers
    3) Wedding Crashers
    4) 40 Year Old Virgin
    5) Big Lebowski

  • Madison

    @Lydia

You don’t think Meet the Parents is a top 20 comedy of the past 10 years? Really? Wow.

I think i probably should have put 40YOV on there, looking back. That movie is indeed hysterical.

My problem with Borat is that I was such a big fan of Da Ali G Show, so many of the jokes seemed recycled, and the movie wasn’t very fresh for me.

I would have included Lebowski, but that wasn’t released within the past 10 years. Sorry.

  • mrbpeppers

No Team America? or napolean dynamite? you honestly thought jay and silent bob strike back was better?

  • Q8248494

    Parker Jammsteinon:

I don’t think that Cera being typecast will really diminish people’s appiciation for Superbad. Sean William Scott was typecast in his fratboy douche role, and American Pie is still hilarious.

  • Madison

    @ mrbpeppers

Is your name an homage to Brian Peppers? Because that would rule.

Team America is hilarious, but Top 20? It’s close.

I don’t think Napoleon Dynamite holds up well, but I do really like it. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is juvenile and crude, but for some reason Jason Mewes just kills me. It makes me laugh harder than the other two movies, that’s for sure.

  • http://www.popcultureentertainment.wordpress.com Brandon S.

    Huge problems:
Hot Rod – Yes, it was a funny movie, but to put it above such clearly superior classics as Office Space, Anchorman, American Pie, Best in Show…I don’t even think it deserves to be on the list.

The Ten – another medicore MTV movie that was only sporadically funny and got most of its laughs through cheap, bawdy humor. Yes, you can have bawdy humor and still be really good (Wedding Crashers, Forty-Year Old Virgin), but The Ten merely just blatantly spouted out obvious puns.

Super Troopers – Number One? Really?

The Hangover came out less than a month ago. Isn’t it a little presumpuous to put it on the best twenty comedies in the last ten years?

Meet the Parents & Tropic Thunder & Zoolander all in the top ten? I agree that both Zoolander and Meet the Parents deserves a spot in the top twenty, but but not both in the top ten, and once again, not above such clear superior classics as Best in Show, American Pie, and Jay & Silent Bob.

Once again, Harold & Kumar above Office Space??

Office Space easily deserves a spot in the top five. No question.

    Glaring Omissions:

No love for Knocked Up or 40-Year Old Virgin??? These were Apatow’s first two movies that redefined comedy as we know it today. Wedding Crashers, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Superbad, The Hangover – they all exist because Judd Apatow made these two movies first.

South Park? Possibly the best TV-to-movie adaptation comedy ever made?

Shaun of the Dead and/or Hot Fuzz – both defining parodies in each of their genres.

Speaking of parodies – Galaxy Quest is one of the best sci-fi parodies ever made – accessible to both non-geeks and all the trekkie sci-fi nerds. Pretty much Tim Allen’s only good post-Home Improvement movie.

Gah – I can understand partly why you only placed quotes and not paragraphs explaining their inclusion on the list – but really, it comes off like you did it because you knew that people would agree with your extremely questionable choices. Your list says “The 20 Best Comedies of the Last 10 Years.” It should say, “My 20 Favorite Comedies of the Last 10 Years.” False advertising – if you’re gonna claim they’re the best, give us good reason to believe they are! The quotes are cool, honestly, but they’re kind of a cop out.

  • http://www.popcultureentertainment.wordpress.com Brandon S.

Sorry, that should say, “DISagree with your questionable choices.”

  • Madison

    @ Brandon S.

With regard to The Hangover, no, I don’t think it’s too early at all. That movie is going to hold up real well.

As far as Knocked Up – I LOVE that movie. I think it’s really, really well-written, and the funny parts are hilarious. I just don’t think it’s a comedy, so to speak, and that’s actually a compliment. There’s more depth to Knocked Up than most movies, period, let alone “comedies.”

I said above that I should have included 40YOV. I really don’t know why I didn’t. Comedy is a weird thing…I’m sure this list would look different if I did it again a month from now, you know?

And finally, as for paragraphs – what can you really say? “This movie is funny because X,Y,Z?” It’s totally subjective; there’s no point in saying so. Besides, people (myself included) like movie quotes.

False advertising? Come on, man. You should know it’s an opinion regardless of the title.

    Thanks for reading.

  • chelsea

am i the only one who is disappointed NOT to see FANBOYS?

and putting any apatow movie other than Knocked Up is a cruel joke.

also, i agree that Clerks II is way superior to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and so is Zack and Miri Make A Porno for that matter….

i know it is hard to narrow down the top 20, but i commend you for putting your opinion out there.

Like everyone else said, 40-year-old-virgin is probably one of the funniest of all time and deserves a spot on this list if nothing else does.

My interest is piqued in The Hangover, I’ll have the check it out eventually. It seems to have polarized most of the critics I regularly read.

I’m one of the few who didn’t enjoy Old School (I thought it was a drama, wherein Will Farrell is almost developmentally disabled…it’s like a fratboy version of Lars von Triers’ The Idiots…I found it more pitiful than funny). I tried to watch Wedding Crashers but looking at the Wilson brothers’ faces makes me want to break them.

I think Idiocracy deserves a place there, but I guess Office Space trumps it (especially with the Wilson factor).

I really wanted to mention Friday for this list and then I IMDB’d it. holy crap it’s almost FIFTEEN YEARS old! i’m getting long in the tooth I think…which would explain why I am saying things like “long in the tooth”…

Super Troopers as #1 is a stretch but whatevs…that’s one of those rare films that gets better each time you watch it, like Lebowski, and with comedies that aspect carries a lot of water.

  • Madison

    @ mrgone1980

Again, yeah, I messed up by not ranking 40YOV higher. Wish I could have that one back.

It’s interesting that you mention Idiocracy. I thought it was funny, not hilarious, but more importantly, it was a VERY telling commentary on our society. It does seem as if that road is one we may go down in the future, which is quite sad.

  • mrgone1980

    @ Madison

I know exactly what you mean. The first time I watched Idiocracy I was like “Ok, this is the worst comedy ever made.” I mean, it wasn’t funny, it was goddamn frightening! But it’s a fine comedy…and I have to admit I crack up every single time the general-type character in the beginning begins his interrupted tirade: “You see, a pimp’s love is not like normal love…”

liking the site…liking the site a lot.

  • http://popcultureentertainment.wordpress.com Brandon S.

    @ Madison
“This movie is funny because X,Y,Z?” It’s totally subjective; there’s no point in saying so. Besides, people (myself included) like movie quotes.”

I love movie quotes, and if you had put paragraphs in addition to the quotes, it would have made your article better founded rather than like a list you just doodled out one day. And what’s wrong with saying that a movie is funny because, X, Y, Z? It shows you know what you’re talking about and that you’re able to defend your position. I may disagree with your reasons but at least I’ll end up respecting you more. With this list, the lack of justification for the inclusions and the glaring errors throw your list into great question. Yes, I know it’s your opinion, but as someone with a readership you have a duty to put what you actually believe the 20 Best Comedies of the Last Ten Years are, not just the comdies that you like.

If the list would look different a month down the road, it’s not really a true list of the 20 Best Comedies. A month down the road, American Pie, Anchorman, and Wedding Crashers will still be great comedies that have stood the test of time, unless some slam-bang new comedy overtakes it. (And The Hangover, I’ll give you, is top-notch comedy.)

As for Knocked Up’s status as a “movie,” and not a “comedy,” I’d have to say I disagree, once again. More than 80% of the scenes in that movie are played for laughs. How is this not a comedy?

  • Madison

    @ Brandon S:

There’s one thing you’re really overlooking. Sometimes articles can be written to start a discussion. I value what my readers think; I’ve seen some great movies – like Primer – based on reader suggestions. It seems like a lot of people like offering their opinions on what the 20 best comedies are. What’s wrong with that? I’m not writing for the Washington Post. so let’s not get carried away with what my duty is.

Anyway, I do think that generally, an explanation is appropriate. If you check the site, you’d see that I do that more often than not. I just didn’t think it was necessary for this article.

    Thanks for reading.

  • http://popcultureentertainment.wordpress.com Brandon S.

And I’m saying I think it was necessary for this article, given your choices at top 20. And people will offer their opinion and thoughts on your list regardless of whether or not you put explanatory paragraphs in them – you don’t need to weaken the list by not putting exactly why you believed that Tropic Thunder is a better movie than Office Space. (A choice which I haven’t been the first to point out as extremely questionable.)

Happy mother fing Gilmore…what other movie has Bob Barker

“…but looking at the Wilson brothers’ faces makes me want to break them.”

Cracked up when I read this – you should give a shot at writing one of these.

  • sammon1013

Hot Rod hell yes!!!!!!!!! That is probably the best movie I’ve seen since the South Park Movie without a doubt. I’ve seen it fifteen or so times and keep finding more easter eggs and more hidden references to other pop culture movies. Hot Fuzz should replace Meet the Parents in the list, but maybe not in that position. I didn’t laugh at all during the “Meets”

  • Madison

    @ sammon1013:

Glad you appreciate Hot Rod as much as I do. It’s definitely not a “spoof” movie by any means, but there’s a lot of poking fun at corny movie cliches throughout.

As far as Meet the Parents, I think that’s a movie that either hits close to home for some people or it doesn’t. If you’ve ever tried to make a good impression on a girlfriend’s parents and failed, you’d probably find the movie pretty funny.

  • Abe Frohman

Anchorman #1 – every scene has an hilarious line.
My faves – “You have a magnificent hiney. I mean that thing is good. I wanna be friends with it.”
    And…”Go f*** yourself, San Diego.”

  • Madison

    @ Abe Frohman

I actually wasn’t too crazy about Anchorman when I first saw it, but it’s grown on me quite a bit over the years. I think good comedies should do that – get funnier as they get older.

  • shroomort

well for starters where the fuck is the Big Lebowski on this list.and the guy that said eurotrip instead of road trip you have no taste just like who ever wrote this article has no taste i could make a better list in a coma. every one of these movies is five years old at the most last 10 years my ass. Oh and you missed pineapple express it could have surely taken zoolander or hot rods spot. and clerks 2 was alot more funny then jay and silent bob strike back its almost like some frat boy asshole made this list.

  • Madison

    @ shroomort

Big Lebowski was made in 1998, genius. Clerks 2 sucked. And frat guys like me picked on dudes like you.

    Thanks for reading.

  • ryan

Clerks 2 sucked- If you did not like Jay and Silent Bob thats because you did not get it. That movie was an end of an era where he tried to tie in all those movies together (similar to the Seinfeld finale). Watch Clerk, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma again then watch Jay and Silent Bob. If you don’t love it, you are retarded.

No Farrelly Bros. Dumb and Dumber, Something About Mary

Knocked up was a crappy chick flick, only good scenes were with Paul Rudd

  • Madison

    @ ryan

Those Farrelly Brothers movies are more than 10 years old, my man…

  • Andrew

check out role models I find that funnier evrytime I c it. May not make list but is still worth mentioning. There are quite a few Apatow movies missing. U may not like him but he’s swiftly taking over comedy and will stay there with young actors like Seth Rogen (also a great writer) and Jonah Hill as well as Jason Segel. Anchorman should b higher too. You may have 2 update this list come July 31 when Funny People comes out. That movie may become this young centurie’s greatest comedy, as well as movie (supposed to be meaningful drama.) And how about Elf? I know it’s PG but it’sfucking great. A bit childish sure but it brings u back.

That’s all. I won’t criticize ur choices since evry1 else has and I agree.

  • Andrew

4got about I Love You Man. Funniest movie I’ve seen since Superbad. Paul Rudd could have been in (this is gonna sound terrible) Schindler’s List and it would have been a hilarious movie. He is one of the funniest actors of his generation. Still can’t believe he’s JV Frat Pack.

  • Madison

    @ Andrew

I liked Role Models a lot, bur I Love You Man felt really rushed and pretty generic to me. I didn’t think it was very funny. And Samberg was misused, which is a travesty considering how funny he can be.

Funny People should be great, but I also expect that to be a great movie aside from the comedy.

Elf is terrific; it’d probably make my top 25, actually.

    Thanks for reading.

  • justachick

The Amateurs. First 20 minutes was questionable. Then I laughed out loud.

  • Madison

    @ justachick

The Amateurs? I’ve never heard of it…I’ll have to check it out. I have, however, seen The Aristocrats…

  • Sanjeewa Basnayake

Suprize to me! Non of the Adam Sandller’s movies hasn’t on the list.

  • Triq

This must be the top 20 randomly selected comedies! Really stupid list made by someone who doesn’t recognize good humor! Sorting is all wrong, some didnt even deserve to be in top 200 let alone top 20!

  • Madison

    @ Triq

I actually just searched for “comedies” online and then randomly assigned numbers 1-20 to each one I found.

Why don’t you suggest some comedies that should be in the top 20 instead of crying about it?

  • Thomas

i think some of those should be up there, but ben stiller in Zoolander was the best comedy ever.

  • DutchBikeGirl

Good suggestions from everyone. I actually am only commenting because I’d someday like to hook up with Andy who likes Freddy Got Fingered. Who are you, Andy? Can we start a secret online dating romance? “Daddy would you like some saugage?”

  • underrated lizard

not sure where i’d put em but heres the ones i’d put in, in order from best to worst:
    grandma’s boy
    beerfest
    dodgeball
    role models
    i love you man

i’d prolly take out Borat, Best in Show, The Ten, Meet The Parents, Badder Santa, jay and silent bob, and replace harold and kumar with the 2nd one. never seen a couple of them though :)

    “whats wrong with alex?”

“he’s sleeping, and possibly shitting his pants.”

  • im-a-nut

    whether dates comply or not, but here are some of my favs not already mentioned;

death at a funeral – mega classic british comedy, though I hear they’re making a remake and i’m not happy about that – its easily in my top ten

200 cigarettes – this one is a 99 and i love it, but it showcases a ton of fantastic stars, including paul rudd, jeneane garafolo, dave chapelle, afflect brothers and courtney love believe it or not

wet hot american summer – may have been mentioned, but this movie is unreal – especially if you’ve had the opportunity to work at a camp, it really hits the spot

strangers with candy – an old ex-crack head goes back to school; this movie pushes stupidity but it made my friend and i laugh – might not be top 20 quals, but you never know. it is also a tv series

mean girls – i really liked it, its one that still makes me laugh

a lot of the others mentioned and included in your list are great too; grandma’s boy, dodgeball, big lebowski, hot rod, best in show, 40 year old virg, anchorman, wedding crashers, meet the parents, superbad, mallrats, chasing amy and whoever mentioned elf, kudos!

there are a ton of great comedies out there and still comin in, though i gotta say “knocked up” is a terrible movie, i never understood why everyone loved it so much, though ive liked every other apatow film since

  • Legion

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Talladega Nights….

  • LAa

i cant believe pineapple express isnt on there
    but good list.
except that american pie 2 is funnier than american pie 1 so should be on there too :)

  • Jon

needs to have 40 year old virgin and dodgeball.. other than that nice list

  • Joben

    TALLADEGA NIGHTS!!!

  • Madison

    @ Jon

I really should have included 40YOV, looking back.

But thanks, and thanks for reading.

  • Courtney

    ROLE MODELS!! Best comedy ever.

  • Leo

The Hangover should of at least been in the top three!!

  • Someone with taste

This list is bullshit, you got like 3 deece calls, and with 20 apparent stabs in the dark 3 is nothing to be proud of. It has to be said that ben stiller movies while funny in there own way certainly do not merit top ten selections. Oh and the movie ” The Ten ” is quite possibly the biggest piece of garbage ever made. How you manage to make a bad movie with those actors/actresses is mind boggling. I would consider the act of watching it to be a cruel form of torture. Better luck with your next list.

Maybe you should tell me which movies you thought I left out or ranked too low.

  • Someone with taste

Sure why not, both american pie and road trip are absolute classics and merit spots above any ben stiller movie. Hot rod in the top ten is just ridiculous and its hard not to say anything about 40 year old virgins absence but at least you gave it a mention. As for your #1, its a good flick, no big problems with it being #1 and it would certainly be on my list. However i don’t see how someone who enjoys it that much cant put Beerfest in there list or at least give it mention. Now as for movies left out. Paul Rudd, I Love You Man. Great movie, I laugh every time. And while White Castle > Escape from Guantanamo Bay, I would still include it in my top 20. Hope I was of some assistance.

  • Madison

    @ Someone with taste

American Pie is incredible…but it was released in 1999, which is why it missed the cut.

Road Trip was 2000, so that must have been an oversight on my part. That’s a great comedy, agreed.

I like Beerfest a lot (especially the German guys), but it really doesn’t come close to Super Troopers. Like Super Troopers, though, it really grows on you. It’s a good one, just not top 20 IMO.

I was disappointed by I Love You, Man – thought it was Rudd’s worst role. He’s much better at playing smug than he is at playing a loser.

    Thanks for reading.

  • Someone with taste

Maybe you should read your own list. American pie DID make the cut, and if its gonna be there its better then 15th. I love you, Man is the bomb. Rudd does a good job showing his versatility in a more quirky, awkward role. Agree to disagree there anyway. The real crime on this list is the “The Ten”. Come on, its just awful. Anything would be better. Talladega Nights, Role Models and Accepted just to name a few. This is of course just the opinion of

    Someone with taste

  • Madison

    @ Someone with taste

I wrote this a while ago…I guess I should have!

We’re gonna have to agree to disagree on The Ten, too. Sorry, that movie kills me. Especially Liev Schreiber buying all those CAT scan machines.

To be honest, this list would probably look different were I to make it again. Comedies are pretty mood-dependent, and I really have no idea how I left off 40 Year Old Virgin.

  • Bert

I have to suggest a strange Canadian mockumentary that most of you have probably never seen, but FUBAR (2002) is an obscenely funny take on the life and times of two metalheads from Alberta. Totally worth a watch. That or one of the Trailer Park Boys movies.

The only ratings I would change (without having seen 4 of the top 20) is that Best in Show and Anchorman deserve to be higher, top ten for sure.

  • Madison

    @ Bert

Thanks for the recommendation; I will put it on my Netflix queue.

My only complaint about Best in Show is that, for me, it doesn’t really get going until Fred Willard shows up.

  • JWed

Although this list is pretty good, and I especially love the fact that Hot Rod is on there…even if you didn’t mention the EPIC dance punch scene…anyway…Eurotrip is FAR AND ABOVE better than Road Trip and how can you not include Shaun of the Dead when that is easily one of the funniest parody films if not the funniest of all time. Badder Santa needs to be taken off this list in a heartbeat.

  • Bert

    @ Madison

Fred Willard IS pretty much brilliant in everything.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but in trying to come up with the funniest movies of the last 10 years there seems to be a drop in quality compared to say, the 80′s, where everything Bill Murray touched turned to comedy gold, and everything Christopher Guest touched turned into…a foil wrapped cucumber.

That’s not to say that there haven’t been some funny movies lately, just that there don’t seem to be nearly as many of high quality. Maybe we’re just too far removed from Monty Python, Peter Sellers and Mel Brooks these days.

  • Madison

    @ Bert

I completely agree. And even pre-80s, too: there hasn’t been anything over the past decade that has even sniffed Animal House or Stripes. Maybe it’s because just about everything’s been done.

  • Levi

    ALI G IN DA HOUSE!!

  • alex_pissed_off_with_the_guy that_made_this_shit_list

This is possibly the worst list iv ever seen hot rod! hot rod! come on i watched that film and was bored to death shockingly bad! how the hell has step brothers not made this list was one of the funniest films iv ever seen and y the hell is anchorman so low down ur a muppet who ever made this list… i bet if it was a list of the best all time comdeys dumb & dumber would just miss out TWAT!

  • Madison

    Awesome comment, bro.

  • Papa D

Wicked List. I agree with everything. I thought wedding crashers was funnier than #20 but still an awesome movie list!

  • a1314

Hmm… from those movies… you look like a stoner XD

  • SUPERTROOPERS

LoL great to see that you have put supertroopers as no .1
Soo underated wish the stoners could have stayed in it throughout the movie though xDD…..Didnt like tropic thunder and didnt see i love u man on there…..StILL GREAT LIST!

  • Jay

Tropic Thunder was terrible. How on earth did it make someone’s list.

  • geez

40 year old virgin best comedy of all time!

  • Dazdoggydaddydude

I love films like American Pie, Superbad, Knocked up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Old School, Wedding Crashers, Get him to the greek, Anchorman, Step Brothers, The 40 year old virgin, Harold and Kumars etc
what films would u think are in the same kind of category as these

  • diarm

    great list madison.

ignore the naysayers, nobody is ever going to agree on a list like this.

i’m not sure about harold and kumar or tropic thunder and i’ve never seen hot rod but the rest are all great calls.

supertroopers at #1 is a great call. most of my mates would see anchorman as a godlike figure at the top and i’ve been ridiculed for suggesting that supertroopers is better but i really think it is.

farva is one of the greatest characters of all time and the biker restaurant gag is the closest i’ve ever come to pissing myself watching a film.

one addition i would offer is a lesser known british film called “mike bassett: england manager”. you guys might not like it as much as it’s focused on the british sports and press scene but it’s a piece of absolute comedy genius.

  • murphile

I was with you until hot rod made it on the top ten. that movie was pure crap.

  • zozo

Stumbled upon your list…checked out “Super Troopers” for a first time. Thank you my friend, that is one of the best comedies I`ve ever seen. Definitely worthy of being nr.1 on your list. HAHA!

  • Madison

    @ zozo

Nice! Glad you discovered the brilliance of that movie.

  • filipero

    where is zohan ???

  • Hayley

I am so glad hot rods up there that film gets better with every watch ‘may your hammer be mighty’. Tropic thunder was pretty bad and only okay compared to step brothers and old school. I think Anchorman should have been in the top five such a good film. I loved office space was glad to see that on there :)

  • Christian

The ten ? Really ? that has to be the shittiest movie ever .

    • Madison

      Wrong. Movie is hilarious.

  • Ian

I agree with only about 1/3 of this list, including: Supertroopers; Best in Show; The Hangover; Office Space; Anchorman; Tropic Thunder & Meet the Parents (though i hate Stiller). The rest of them were just awful (Superbad; anything with Seth Rogen and/or Jason Segal)… some had a funny moment or two, but that’s it.

my list, in no particular order….
    Supertroopers
    Best in Show
    The Hangover
    Anchorman
    Tropic Thunder
    Nurse Betty
    Me Myself and Irene
    A Mighty Wind
    Shaun of the Dead
    The Slammin Salmon
    Hot Fuzz
    Austin Powers in Goldmember
    Thank You For Smoking
    Old School
    Death to Smoochy
Death At A Funeral (original British version)

    • Madison

I just saw The Slammin Salmon a few weeks ago and could not believe how funny it was. No idea why that wasn’t more popular.

  • Ian

I agree. As funny as Beerfest was, Salmon was even better. I love the Broken Lizard guys

I am very VERY picky when it comes to comedies… I don’t think Rogen, Segal, Jonah Hill, Sandler, are funny… or their movies – Superbad – turned off after 30 mins; Knocked Up – turned off in even less time. These guys think that only crudeness is funny, and that’s all they do. Yeah, the Broken Lizard guys are crude a bit, but they don’t rely on it… they are funny in other ways.

Also, Will Ferrell lost his luster for me after Talladega Nights… it was ok, but he’s really the same in all his movies. Talladega was meh; Blades of Glory, terrible; Semi-Pro, even worse. But I heard “The Other Guys” is really funny.

    • Madison

Sounds to me like you just don’t like Jews. I keed, I keed….

I totally agree on the Broken Lizard guys, of course – even Club Dread has its moments.

  • Ian

HA! Good one :) I dunno… they just irk the shite outta me

  • godsson

all of u need 2 stop watching tv and go outside u zombies

  • ComfortablyDumb

The list is somewhat outside of my own taste but I can agree that most of these are actually funny. The only real WTF-moment I had was Road Trip. Come on, when has Tom Green EVER been funny?

Honestly, all he ever does is what HE thinks is a funny face. For everyone around him it’s just embarrassing. I don’t know, maybe I’m way too stiff to understand his “progressive” humour but honestly, I think that the only “comedian” worse than Tom Green is Andy Dick.

  • Ashley

YOU DONT HAVE I LOVE YOU MAN!!??? ARE YOU KIDDING??? Thats a great great movie. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel make one hell of a pair!!

And a movie that no one seems to mention but an “underground” type of crew is Grind. Yea yea its about skateboarders – but the characters crack me up!

Other than that – great list!!!

  • clovas

Nice…If i were to make a list it would be almost identical except i’d have to take out The Hangover..I just don’t understand how it got so damn popular…I forced myself to watch it and only got about 30 minutes into it..couldnt stand it..

  • http://pigskinempire.com Aaron

Tropic Thunder and Zoolander were HORRRIBLE!

  • Grandma’s Boy

I thought your list was great! I use these lists as suggestions for downloads. The only disappointments are the people responding with attitude but no suggestions. Some of those replies are brutal. Anyways, I second the “Fubar”, “Fubar 2″, all Trailer Park Boys, and Tenacious D “Pick of Destiny”. Life Aquatic.
Its now years past this post, but does anybody like the MacGruber movie? Something about it gets funnier and its not Phillipe.

  • Seth

I agree with more then half of the list but there are quite a few I wish were in it it and a few I wish were not. This may be a strange one but In my PERSONAL top 20, The Rocker would be in my top ten… I just really really enjoyed that movie. but probably just me.

  • Ben

Ok, I liked this list but here is my Top 20 in no particular order.
Super Troopers, Zach and Miri Make a Porno, Waiting, Wedding Crashers, 40 Year Old Virgin, Jackass the Movie, Meet the Parents, American Pie 2, Dodgeball:A True Underdog Story, Superbad, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Grandma’s Boy, Old School, The Hangover, Role Models, Beerfest, Paul Blart:Mall Cop, Accepted, School of Rock, Hot Tub Time Machine.

  • FRE

Bad Santa #1 in my opinion. (from this list of course)

  • diane

Why did no one really mention King Pin or Grounds hog day? Also Grandmas Boy….

  • fred

what a shitty list. supertroopers is good for 10 minutes then it gets boring. i think you have not seen many good comedy movies

  • http://www.youtube.com comdeian

    dewey cox walkhard!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dimitri

    Madison:
    my list:
    1 wedding crushers
    2 Borat
    3 anger management
    4 Road trip
    5 American Pie
    6 Meet the parents
and so on, with respect I think everybody got it’s own taste when it comes to everything, but still if we generalize it, there is certain movies that stand out and you have listed some good movies, but your hierachy sucks.

  • Jomar Samu

An underrated gem is ‘Made’, about two small time gangsters who finally get their big break! It stars Vince Vaughn in arguably his best performance – he is the king of improv! Another would be ‘Ghost World’ starring Thora Birtch and Scarlett Johannson – hilarious in a quirky kinda way! ‘Sideways’ is probably my favourite movie of the 00s. ‘Team America’, ‘I Love You, Man’, ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’ would also be on my list! Pretty sure ‘Office Space’ is from 1999. ‘Borat’ is hilarious but consists of mainly recycled gags from the original UK TV series but would still sneak in. Most Apatow films are pretty good but a tad overrated if you ask me, none of them come close to his TV series ‘Freaks and Geeks’!

  • Jomar Samu

    ‘In Bruges’ too!

  • torigurl

Repeating things repeatedly for the win, Madison! Gets old, huh?

I like anything with Seth Rogan, Micheal Cera, and/or Jonah Hill is great. But not every movie is a winner.

Im also a big fan of Will Ferrell.

Besides, Everyone has an opinion. If we ALL made our own list….none of them would be the same.

All of you being jerks to a stranger and belittling his opinion because it doesnt match yours….go fly a kite.

  • Derrick Oliver

I liked the list and a lot of the suggestions. I also would have included: N. dinamite, Nacho Libre, Dodge Ball, Balls of furry, King Pins….Im sure Im missing some. Who can say what is funny in general….I would have hated half of theese another time in my life. Debate is good as long as its “fair”, fun, and well thought out opinions. Good topic. Maybe the Academy awards will recognize comedy genres one day.

    Awesome list yo!

  • Pojj

Hot Rod is awesome, i do agree with the guy that said there is to much ben stiller.. however i would have liked to see at least one adam sandler movie. I guess its all personal preferance

  • http://stretchmarklotionreviews.info Jim

Loved the old school adam sandler movies!

  • serj

I enjoyed the list, wouldn’ta ranked them the same though. Main objection, Office Space#1! And i also would have included run fat boy, run – hysterical!
Also, i completely agree with you on Wes, couldn’t have said it better myself.
