Burton does indeed seem to make things “darker,” but I thought the original Willy Wonka was much darker than Burton’s remake. I mean, in Burton’s version, the kids are all more or less OK at the end. In the original, their doom seems much more final and horrible. And all the while, Gene Wilder’s Wonka seems to almost get off on it. It’s awesome.

Why does everyone say Burton’s Wonka was more like the book’s? I’m sorry, but even though Wonka did have a pretty big mean streak, he wasn’t catty, or as thoroughly cynical as Burton’s version. It’s all right if he wanted to make a movie based loosely off of Roald Dahl’s (who wrote the first movie’s screenplay) ideas, but it just came off gratuitous, for the sake of entertainment, and laden with CGI. I don’t dislike Depp, honest, but he can’t exactly replace Gene Wilder. Seriously, the only way the new one was more like the book was the actor playing Charlie fit Dahl’s description better.

I guess Tim Burton’s thing is taking childhood stories and making them darker and more appealing to adults, which he’s pretty good at. Still, a dark Alice in Wonderland seems so…cliche. And Anne Hathaway is NOT rocking that blonde. Not to say this movie will be awful! I would see it.

Fair enough. I do have to say, though, that if I could pick a director to direct a live action Alice in Wonderland, Burton would be toward the top of the list.

@ I can definately agree with the kids being much better in the original version. I even liked Charlie better. As for Depp vs. Wilder…I will always like Wilder’s performance as I have so many childhood memories of it. However, as an adult, I much prefer Depp’s take on Wonka.

I really feel both are great films and I hope I feel the same about Alice in Wonderland as I really liked the original live action version of it as well.

Yeah, I really did. I remember wanting it to end when I was in the theater. I was such a huge fan of the original growing up – even the scary boat scene – and as talented as Depp is, Wilder’s version of Wonka was superior.

Plus, the kids touring the factory weren’t nearly developed enough. How great was the original Veruca Salt? THAT was a performance.

Re: Willy Wonka- Tim Burton made a film quite true to the book, actually. Roald Dahl utterly despised the original film as it completely changed the character of Willy Wonka from a quirky young genius into a creepy old man, as well as many, many other changes. A return to Wonderland with Burton’s imagination and this cast should be quite an experience.

@Madison: Disliked Willy Wonka? Really? I thought Depp’s perfomance in that movie was awesome. I really enjoyed Tim Burton’s re-imagining of the original film (which I also really enjoyed). I’m excited to see Burton’s take on another childhood favourte.
