Scorsese Descends Into Madness with Shutter Island Trailer

Fortunately for all of us, it’s a good kind of madness, and not like an “I’m Oliver Stone and am going to film a $150 million biopic about a gay Alexander the Great starring a blond Colin Farrell” type madness. Sorry, it’s been years and I still can’t get over that.

Anyways, Shutter Island is a pretty significant departure for Scorsese, who’s best known for his ass-kicking mafia movies. But he’s got old buddy Leonardo DiCaprio there to keep him grounded, along with a pretty excellent cast including Jackie Earle Haley and Ben Kingsley. DiCaprio is an police investigator trying to locate an escaped prisoner from the mental asylum, Shutter Island. From the trailer it seems he uncovers a deeper mystery surrounding the place, discovers a terrible secret kept hidden by the Shutter Island staff, and has to avoid going crazy in order to figure everything out.

If I saw this same exactly trailer and it had a no name director with no name actors, then no, I probably wouldn’t be terribly excited about it, but I am very encouraged to see a boatload of A-listers finally grasp hold of the horror genre, and I think they’ll do some amazing things with it.

P.S. As I was watching this, I couldn’t help but think that if you didn’t know any better, this could also be a trailer for Chris Nolan’s Inception, his “thriller which takes place within the architecture of the mind,” also starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

shutter island is one crap-movie, martin basically had a taste for the M. Night Shyamalan routine….so he found the first book with a “ooh what a twist!” ending and ran with it

the movie is great and intriguing……until Dicaprio gets to the Lighthouse….then it just slaps you in the face and wastes your time
