Mickey Rourke as Whiplash is Um…Uh…

So my (and I’m assuming most people’s) initial reaction when seeing this first shot of Mickey Rourke in full Whiplash gear was to wonder why a homeless Vietnam vet decided to put polio leg braces on his arms and wear a laser tag vest in the middle of a racetrack.
But then once you Google what the comic book villain Whiplash actually looks like, you’re thankful that the studio is going in a more Mad Max direction than the original “Gimp in a dungeon” philosophy. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more S&M character in a mainstream comic before. Look, whips can be a cool weapon no doubt (Indiana Jones, Omega Red), but start putting the guy in a gimp mask and string some metal rings across his chest and you’re sending a different message entirely.
Also, I have a hard time believing that this guy is going to pose a serious threat to Iron Man when his “armor” only covers up about 20% of his skin and appears mostly to be made out of leather. All Stark has to do is hover out of whip range, fire a few missiles at the dude and he’s a Russian S&M pile of ashes.

Bane from Batman & Robin was more S&M…
…and shame on you for making me remember that movie
You really have no idea what you are talking about do you? You can’t even tell that this isn’t him in full armor? If you remember the first movie when Stark is testing out his flight, he wore a similar suit.
And also, take a look at his garb at the bottom. He’s just broken out of prison.
You’re a moron of a writer.
He just broke out of Russian prison and now he’s at the Monaco Grand Prix? Sure.
Look for the sake of the movie I hope you’re right and this isn’t the actual costume, but in any case it was a pretty dumb teaser shot to release.
Also this:

is the Stark flight test suit you’re referencing. I’d say there’s a bit of a difference there, wouldn’t you?

Have you even seen Iron Man?
What Rourke is wearing looks pretty damn close to what Josh was talking about.

You need to look up the word research, sir.
Or maybe read the full JoBlo article and comments before copying said article.
I see what you’re saying about the test suit, but the link I gave was also a “test suit,” albeit a more finished one.
And the JoBlo comments seems to agree with me by the way. When the first shots came out of Tony in similar gear, we all knew that he was going to get Iron Man armor eventually, but when you see what Whiplash actually looks like in the comic, this Rourke shot actually don’t look that far off, which in this case, is a bad thing because comic book Whiplash is an S&M freakshow.
Hopefully you’re right and the costume does get improved (and I’m pretty sure it will) but it’s not unreasonable to think that this design could be close to the finished product when you see the original character as reference.
