I don’t usually comment on other people’s commentary of news, but really TV Squad, you think Freddie Prinze Jr. is being lined up to replace Jack Bauer?
Freddie Prinze Jr. will be joining the cast of 24 for the eighth season as a recently-returned marine and Jack Bauer-wannabe named Davis Cole. I think this is an example of Fox either wanting to expand or continue the franchise without Kiefer Sutherland.
Think about it. Sutherland is only getting older. He can’t be Jack Bauer forever. Prinze is a younger, recognizable face (much as all of us want to forget the Scooby Doo movie franchise). This could be the set-up for one of three things: the retirement of Jack Bauer from 24, a spin-off series, or an opportunity to have more negotiating power for Kiefer Sutherland’s next contract renewal. It could even be a combination of the three.
So the question to ask is: could the series continue without Jack Bauer, or would that be the beginning of the end? Since the name of the show is 24 and not Jack Bauer, I would think so.
What the hell? A recognizable male face joins the cast and you think he’s going to replace Kiefer Sutherland? And in response to your last question, the show might as well be called Jack Bauer, because there is no show without him, and a statement like yours can really only be made by someone who doesn’t watch the show. You can’t just swap Freddie Prinze Jr. for Kiefer Sutherland and think the show’s fanbase of seven years isn’t going to bat an eyelash. Remember how well it went over when they hinted that Shia LeBeouf might be the new Indiana Jones?
So what if Jack Bauer is now literally a grandpa on the show? I’d watch Jack Bauer kick terrorist ass in a wheelchair if need be, but no way in hell I would tune in to a Freddie Prinze-led 24.
But a spin-off? Eh, I’d be open to a pilot.
