10 of the Coolest Sonic the Hedgehog Hacks
I’ll be totally honest. I really have no idea as to how Nintendo and Genesis games are hacked. Is it some type of Game Genie program that runs concurrently with an emulator? Or is it simply viewing the code for a game and programming from within? Hopefully someone can fill me in.
In the meantime, take a gander at 10 of the coolest Sonic the Hedgehog hacks I could find. However they were made, they seem pretty impressive. I am especially fond of “Tetris Boss” and “Genocide Corridor.” Enjoy, and if you have any cool Sonic hacks that aren’t found here, go ahead and post them in the comments.
Really, though, someone please explain how these hacks are performed. I’m clueless.

Sonic Nexus isn’t a Genesis hack. It’s a Sonic engine done in C, built specifically for Macs and PCs.
yo understand how genesis games are hacked, you have to know a little about how the games are played on the computer. the actual cartridge has several chipsets inside that are basically like solid state drives, they contain all the little 1′s and 0′s that make the game. a game ROM copies all off the chipsets into a single file, while modifying them so that they all have specific hex addresses.
when the file is on a computer, it can be opened up in a hex editor so that the 1′s and 0′s can be changed(although the data is compressed from binary to the hexadecimal system). hackers will perform tasks like editing the colours of sprite pixels, moving scenery, redesigning scenery, editing images for the title screen, etc. and with the proper documentaion, it isn’t really all that complicated(until they start programming in ASM. there I have no clue whats done).
