American Gladiators Movie is Best, Worst Idea Ever

I’m not quite sure where to even begin with this story.

Johnny Ferraro, creator of the “American Gladiators” TV franchise, is bringing a live-action adaptation of the property to the bigscreen.

Former Legendary Pictures chief marketing officer Scott Mednick is producing “American Gladiators.” The goal is to create an action story that takes place inside the world Ferraro has created.

“I look forward to creating a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters,” Mednick said.

What the…? What?

How exactly do you turn a game show featuring copious amounts of foam and spandex into a move that people want to watch? Have we really run out of superheroes and video games and toys to base movies off of, and now we’re trying to convert game shows into film? What’s next, a Price is Right feature length project? A Fear Factor prequel? A Jeopardy trilogy?

All this being said, an American Gladiators movie will be the most totally excellent project ever conceived as long as Malibu and Nitro (from the ’80s) and Titan and Crush (from the 2000’s) all show up. And all the Gladiators are prison guards and the competitors are ex-convicts and they use real weapons and fire pits and it’s the year 2050.
