When I read the second book of the series, The Drawing of the Three, and Eddie Dean was described through Roland's eyes, I instantly thought of Jared leto in Requiem for a Dream. Thats just the visual I connected to Eddie Dean while reading the books. Now that an actual cast could be in consideration, Jared Leto seems more and more like the perfect actor for Eddie.

For Susannah I could see Thandie Newton being good. I could also see Zoe Saldana, or also Kerry Washington.

For Jake of course Macaulay Culkin, Hands down ... (Just kidding). I'm not sure who would be good for Jake.

For Roland, Clint Eastwood would've been perfect considering the character was based on him, however he is too old now.

I honestly believe it can be made a movie if it is condensed into 3 parts and they take their time. This is the only fictional book series I have ever followed and I would be pissed if they destroyed my image of this novel.
P.s. Sam elliot as Eldred jonas is exactly how I saw it in my mind and it would probably be the only one that would fit.

I'm not going to really go into casting all that much here, I'd just like to say that I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dennis Quaid as Roland. It seems such an obvious fit to me. I've always found him underrated as an actor, and I have to say that I thought Ryan Gosling was a perfect fit for Eddie (go watch "Half Nelson").

But I would submit that completing the series as a film is doomed for failure. If you did it in less films, say 3-4, then you're robbing the viewer and telescoping it far far too much. If you do it as 7, then the viewer will never see past the third film... as it is far too myopic and strange a topic to make enough scratch to warrant 7 films.

It seems to me that it's obviously meant to be a series on HBO and nowhere else. It's possible that you could do it in 4-6 seasons of 12 episodes. Take "Wizard and Glass" for instance. Instead of it being told as a palver, it could occurr as flashbacks throughout the first few seasons. Just my thoughts.

I will agree with Warren's post about fitting all of this into 7 films. Even Harry Potter couldn't get alot of its good info into the films, and this story is wayyy more epic. If Abrams was smart he would just make this into a sci-fi TV series and make all the seasons he wants! It's not like this will be a more difficult series to make than Lost considering this story is already written! Most of the people i know aren't movie goers and this isn't a story you are going to want to half-a**, and that's exactly what will happen if it's made into a film.

Funny that nobody thought of these:
Viggo Mortensen - Roland Deschain
Jack Black - Eddie Dean

Why Viggo Mortensen: Apart from having played Aragorn, have you seen 'Hidalgo'? It mostly sucks, but it shows Viggo in a similar role as he would be in Dark Tower. And I really think he could look like a younger version of Clint Eastwood, by losing a few pounds

Jack Black: Take a someone who can't be taken seriously. Imagine him as a H-junkie. Make him lose a few pounds, the more the series progress.

All in all, the series will probably be best as a tv series of sorts. It would spike new interest without losing the original fanbase. It would also allow for all the intricate details of the series to exist. At the same time, it would be a damn long series...

I hope that if it does get made they go about it the same way the Lord Of The Rings movies were made, shoot them back to back and so on.

As for casting, I will say that after seeing "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" I think that Brad Pitt could pull of a very good and heart-felt Roland.

Sam Rockwell as Randall Flagg
Casey Affleck as Eddie Dean
Nia Long as Susannah Dean
and i will agree with Kodi Smit-McPhee as Jake

I think getting Christopher Lee as the Chrimson King would be enough to melt my head.

Also I think Sam Elliott as Steven Deschain.

Warren. Simple way to tackle the ending. End it just like the books. I'm not going to throw any spoilers or whatnot, but I can totally see it ending where King throws in his little words of wisdom 'read no further'. Then the credits rolling. At the end, as in many movies these days, have a nice little after credit scene, whatever they call it.
