12 Spoof Movies That are Actually Worth Watching

I feel like it’s been an awfully long time since a decent spoof movie has come out. Check out this list of crap that’s come out recently: Disaster Movie, Superhero Movie and Meet The Spartans. And before that it was Epic Movie, Date Movie, My Big Fat Independent Movie and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and The Comebacks
Personally I miss the spoof movie. When it’s done right it’s a thing of beauty. You take one situation a bit too far. You embellish a character just enough that it’s funny to laugh at. But one thing you can’t do is overdo it. And I think that’s been the real problem recently. Just too much overdoing.
It’s hard to explain but there’s a subtlety to the spoof genre that has to be taken care of. I think the newest spoof movies don’t get it…at all.
However, here are 12 spoof movies that are actually worth watching (with clips)
Scary Movie
Naked Gun Movies
Spaceballs
Austin Powers
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Top Secret
Airplane!
Blazing Saddles
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
This is Spinal Tap
Young Frankenstein
Don’t Be a Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood

Walk Hard really wasn’t a true spoof movie and it was amazing BTW, you probably didn’t watch it. Also if you had actually watched Superhero Movie you would have realized it wasn’t half bad as David Zucker (AIRPLANE, KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE, NAKED GUN) produced it and Craig Mazin (THE SPECIALS) directed it.
I would’ve put:
The Specials
Casino Royale (67 original)
Black Dynamite
I’m Gunna Git You Sucka
Flesh Gordon
Club Dread
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
History of The World Part 1
UHF
on my list
“Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” are two more recent spoof movies that I thought were quite good. And I think your list is pretty complete, but I might add “Kentucky Fried Movie.” And to me, “The Princess Bride” seems like a spoof, just maybe in a less in-your-face kind of way.

Great list. Hot Shots is still one of my favourite spoofs of all time, too.
i’d add “dracula dead and lovin it”, “spyhard” “History of The World Part 1″
Yup, the Hot Shots movies should be there.
Great list. Much appreciated. Airplane may have been the first commercially successful spoof but the Naked Gun trilogy will always be in the mix. Also agree with The Princess Bride be included. So many fantastic moments in that flick.
You put Keenen Ivory Wayans spoof #2 and #3 on the list (Don’t be a Menace… and Scary Movie), but didn’t put the #1, the best spoof movie of all (in my opinion) “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”.
The “Top Secret!” Bookstore scene……BEST SPOOF SCENE EVER!
what no hotshots or black sheep?
Dave – I’d put Walk Hard solidly in the spoof movie category, but that being said, I found it excellent as well. Particularly the cameos. Nothing beats Jack White as Elvis.
“It’s called Karate. Only two kinds of people in the world know it – the Chinese people, and the King. And one of them is me.”
What? No Kung Pow? That movie is EPIC!
i do not understand how Hot Shots! Is not in the list. I would have Meet the Spartians, Hot Shots! (both versions) in my list
good lord, Walk Hard is a brilliant film (and spoof). If you’re dismissing it so quickly I’m left to assume you haven’t actually seen it. When I saw the trailers for it I wasn’t that impressed, but when I actually sat down and watched it….well it became one of my favorite comedies and solidly convinced me that John C. Reilly is an acting genius.
great list. I would have added Dracula Dead and Loving It.
Epic job, best parody list I’ve seen in a while
