Mathematical Fortune Teller Nate Silver Making the Oscars a Lot Less Fun

Do you know who this guy is? If so, you probably followed the ‘08 elections way, way too closely. He’s Nate Silver, the baseball statistician turned political psychic who predicted the results of the general election to almost the exact percentage and went 49 for 50 in the state by state contests. Well, now he’s at it again with the Oscars, and using a mathematical formula that surely borders on witchcraft, he’s predicted the winners of all eight categories.
Here are the highlights:
- - Heath Ledger has an 85.8% chance to win Best Supporting Actor.
- - Taraji P. Henson has a 51% shot at Best Supporting Actress, while Penelope Cruz has a 24.6% share.
- - Mickey Rourke has a 71.1% chance at Best Actor, with Sean Penn at 19%.
- - The only options for Best Actress are Kate Winslett (67.6%) and Meryl Streep (32.4%)
- - And the last two categories? Danny Boyle has a 99.7% “chance” (if you can call it that) at winning best director and his film, Slumdog Millionaire also has a 99% shot at the title.
I honestly have no idea what he’s using to come up with these numbers, but they all look like pretty solid guesses to me. You can read the full breakdown and his thoughts on each category here. I’ll just uh, be heading to my bookie now.
