The Complete Battlestar Galactica ‘Face of the Enemy’ Webisode Collection

As big of a fan as I am of Battlestar Galactica, it pains me to say that until recently I had never watched any of the webisodes that ran in between seasons. There are two, The Resistance, which aired as a prelude to the New Caprica rebellion and the Face of the Enemy, which ran during the yawning episode chasm that occurred during the fourth season.
The Resistance was interesting, but it was much shorter and much less pressingly relevant to the actual series. It revolved mainly around two characters we had barely glimpsed in the series, and the ending wasn’t exactly revolutionary, no pun intended.
Face of the Enemy on the other hand, features ten (longer) shorts of a Felix Gaeta misadventure, and while that might sound like something out of a Tom and Jerry cartoon, it’s probably one of the darker story arcs in the series. Watching it greatly helps your understanding of Gaeta’s motivations for the betrayal of the Galactica and his intense disdain for the Cylons. And you meet his boyfriend. Yup.
Here are all ten webisodes lined up in a row for you courtesy of Hulu. All in all there are about 38 minutes of new footage, which is essentially almost an entire new episode. I’ll have some thoughts after you watch all of them.
Part 1 – 4:11
Part 2 – 3:42
Part 3 – 2:42
Part 4 – 3:12
Part 5 – 4:41
Part 6 – 4:11
Part 7 – 2:12
Part 8 – 3:12
Part 9 – 3:41
Part 10 – 5:43
So as you can see, Gaeta has a rightful distrust of the Cylons, and clearly thinks the alliance with them is going to be bullshit and they’ll stab the human race in the back.
What I don’t understand is something that was brought up in last week’s episode. Baltar says that he and Gaeta have a dark secret, and it’s implied that Gaeta knew about the lists of people that were dying and did nothing about it.
My question is A) is that really the dark secret? and B) why does it make sense that Gaeta knew the people were dying and did nothing about it? What motivation would he have for secretly or subconsciously wanting those people dead? It would seem to go against everything he tries to stand for. I guess this is still the biggest part of the Gaeta puzzle that’s missing for me, and I’d love an explanation from anyone that has it all figured out.
But I did find out why Gaeta never tried to get with Duala, whom I thought he clearly loved. Whoops! Guess not.
