Braid Creator’s Next Project: 2D RPG, Because Depth is Just Too Mainsteam

Gamasutra recently sat down with Braid mastermind Jonathan Blow where he spilled his guts about his latest upcoming project. And by “spilled his guts” I mean vaguely mentioned the direction of the new game and said it might be Pac Man. Oh lord. But what he did give us was a hint that it was going to be a largely dialog based 2D RPG in the vein of the old Final Fantasy series.
“The way I’m thinking about it for the current game is that what goes on in those dialogs is actually very closely related to the core mechanic that you do in the RPG. And I can’t really say more about it. But there is more of a tie, like you were saying is going on with Braid – a tie between the game mechanic, or the core ideas and themes, and the things that you do.
That said, though, if in this game, people do the, “Oh, I’m just playing with the dialog tree” thing, it’s fine, because the way the dialog is used is not necessarily in a straight, dramatic, linear story sense anyway. I think that you just have to be aware of those things and design with them in mind.”
Hmm. The story of Braid was the most difficult thing about the game to grasp, so if Blow’s making an entire game based around dialog and story? Good lord. I’ll have to have my laptop open with a running NeoGAF thread just to figure out what the hell is going on as I play.
