Mgestyk is a Controller-Free Controller, Which is Surely the Next-Gen Wii Philosophy

Published by Paul Tassi at 12:00 pm under News, Video Games

I’m not even sure what Mgestyk was trying to misspell with their name, “megastick” I suppose would be the closest word, which still isn’t actually a word. Well anyways, this video snagged by Joystiq at CES shows the controller-free motion tracking system that allows players to play games without the need to hold on to bits of plastic.

As you’ll see in the video, it’s a bit laggy, but it’s more about the principle. The fact that the tech is this far means we might actually see this in the near future for mass consumption. Now, even though the Wii has waggled its way into your grandparents hearts, I don’t think even Nintendo if suggesting to do away with controllers entirely, but I wouldn’t put it past them. The Wii 2 or Rainbow Sparkle 5000 or whatever they end up calling it might have you finger-banging your way through hordes of zombies or jumping up and down in your living room to stomp on Goomba’s heads.

What the game industry is starting to lose sight of is that video games are for lazy people. I want to be able to sit down and play Halo for eight hours straight, a feat that isn’t possible when I have to hyperextend my elbow every time I want to throw a grenade.
