Wii Sports Officially Surpasses Super Mario Bros. as Best Selling Game of All Time…Sigh

It’s a dark day for the video game industry as Wii Sports is now being crowned the top selling game of all time. In the latest VGChartz numbers, it has surpassed Super Mario Bros. for the NES at 40.24 million units.

I was quite literally just now about to cry foul because “Wii Sports cheated because it comes bundled with the Wii,” but I’ve discovered that most NES’s came bundled with Super Mario Bros. so that kind of negates it. It’s rare to see any game come consistently bundled with a system these days, even Nintendo stopped doing that with the 64 and the Gamecube. 360s and PS3s only come bundled with something (usually a sh*tty kids’ game) when some sort of promotion is going on. Wii Play has been in the top ten (and usually five) sales charts since it’s release with the Wii because it comes bundled with a controller.

I’m finding this whole thing a bit sad, considering the exceptionally creative and innovative Super Mario Bros. has now been superceeded by mindless waggling, but at least the game industry as a whle has come along way since the NES, if if we must suffer through Miis and Red Rings of Death and the like.

I understand your point, but honestly, Wii Sports is every bit as innovative now as SMB was then. Love it or hate it, it’s a completely different experience from anything that came before it.
Also, while I’ll agree that MANY wii games are filled with “mindless waggling” wii sports isn’t one of them. To complete the challenge modes takes real skill. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my traditional games, but I’m thrilled that Nintendo has continued trying to get mainstream gaming acceptance. SMB was the start and Wii Sports is the pinnacle.

    @ hardsix

Nice comment. I agree with you up until the end…we have not even scratched the surface of what video games are going to be like…

What I meant to say is that Wii Sports is the realization of the objective that SMB initiated, to get regular folks enjoying video games. I totally agree that we have no idea where video games will take us in the future. And that’s a good thing IMHO.

Yeah but along with ports of the game to other consoles i think SMB wins out.
